{"id":268610,"date":"2025-07-17T06:26:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T06:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/268610\/"},"modified":"2025-07-17T06:26:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T06:26:15","slug":"edinburgh-to-host-free-festival-on-scotlands-colonial-past-languages-and-gaming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/268610\/","title":{"rendered":"Edinburgh to host free festival on Scotland&#8217;s colonial past, languages and gaming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0SERIES\u00a0of\u00a0talks\u00a0and\u00a0workshops\u00a0on\u00a0health,\u00a0the\u00a0creative\u00a0arts\u00a0and\u00a0video\u00a0games\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0held\u00a0during\u00a0a\u00a0festival\u00a0on\u00a0knowledge\u00a0in\u00a0September.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0myriad\u00a0of\u00a0issues \u2013 including personal data,\u00a0the\u00a0use\u00a0of\u00a0Scots language, future cities\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0range\u00a0of\u00a0other social topics \u2013\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0discussed\u00a0during\u00a0the\u00a0Royal Society\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/local-news\/edinburgh-news\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Edinburgh;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Edinburgh<\/a>\u2019s (RSE) Curious\u00a0Festival\u00a0of\u00a0Knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Held\u00a0from\u00a0September\u00a06-14, one\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0free\u00a0festival\u2019s\u00a0highlights is\u00a0a\u00a0talk\u00a0on\u00a0Scotland\u2019s colonial past, led by PhD student Ash Charlton, who was recently\u00a0a\u00a0project researcher with\u00a0the\u00a0University\u00a0of\u00a0Edinburgh\u2019s anatomical museum.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0talk, titled Taken, studied, displayed: readdressing\u00a0the\u00a0University\u00a0of\u00a0Edinburgh\u2019s African skull collections \u2013\u00a0will\u00a0explore\u00a0a\u00a0recent project to research\u00a0and\u00a0improve documentation\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0museum\u2019s skull collections as\u00a0a\u00a0basis for future repatriation requests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25298490.scots-language-centre-staff-not-paid-amid-fraud-allegations\/?rel=cl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Scots Language Centre plunged into crisis as board resigns over payments row;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Scots Language Centre plunged into crisis as board resigns over payments row<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Charlton said: \u201cThis event\u00a0will\u00a0share\u00a0the\u00a0stories\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0individuals whose skulls are\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0collection, where they came from\u00a0and\u00a0how they became part\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0museum\u2019s collection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, very little is known about most\u00a0of\u00a0these individuals through historic erasure\u00a0and\u00a0lack\u00a0of\u00a0documentation, although through this\u00a0talk\u00a0I\u00a0will\u00a0discuss some\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0few cases we know more about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConversely\u00a0a\u00a0lot more is known about\u00a0the\u00a0\u2018donors\u2019 who presented these human remains to\u00a0the\u00a0university. Medical students, doctors, religious missionaries, geologists\u00a0and\u00a0botanists were all responsible for contributing to\u00a0the\u00a0growing anatomy collections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Play for Good: Video\u00a0game\u00a0exhibition<\/p>\n<p>Also featuring at\u00a0the\u00a0festival\u00a0is Play for Good,\u00a0a\u00a0video\u00a0game\u00a0exhibition\u00a0on\u00a0how they can help with\u00a0health, wellbeing\u00a0and\u00a0social inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Event organiser Dr Andrew Reid,\u00a0of\u00a0Abertay University\u00a0and\u00a0member\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Young Academy\u00a0of\u00a0Scotland, said: \u201cSimply put, designing\u00a0games\u00a0for good means thinking about how\u00a0games\u00a0can provide\u00a0a\u00a0positive outcome to various social or cultural environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got\u00a0a\u00a0couple\u00a0of\u00a0projects here that are showing\u00a0games\u00a0to promote physical activity by using your body as an input, all\u00a0the\u00a0way through to exploring mental\u00a0health\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0topic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are generally spaces that are quite difficult to deal with\u00a0in\u00a0any given context, but within\u00a0games\u00a0we create\u00a0a\u00a0safe space to explore some very challenging issues\u00a0and\u00a0very challenging conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walking tour around Edinburgh\u2019s Greyfriars Kirkyard<\/p>\n<p>While many\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Curious events are\u00a0held\u00a0within\u00a0the\u00a0RSE, this year\u2019s programme also features an interactive walking tour around Edinburgh\u2019s Greyfriars Kirkyard.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Daria Tuhtar,\u00a0the\u00a0tour\u00a0will\u00a0explore\u00a0the\u00a0unique\u00a0and\u00a0intricate language\u00a0of\u00a0symbols\u00a0and\u00a0metaphors that many\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0monuments\u00a0in\u00a0Greyfriars are decorated with,\u00a0and\u00a0how people\u2019s attitudes towards death have changed with\u00a0the\u00a0passage\u00a0of\u00a0time.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0tour\u00a0will\u00a0uncover how ideas\u00a0of\u00a0death, immortality\u00a0and\u00a0resurrection coalesce\u00a0in\u00a0one\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0most striking locations that Edinburgh boasts.<\/p>\n<p>Royal Society\u00a0of\u00a0Edinburgh general secretary professor Jo Shaw said: \u201cToday we announce\u00a0the\u00a0programme\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0RSE\u2019s Curious\u00a0festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurious is an opportunity to throw open\u00a0the\u00a0door to\u00a0the\u00a0RSE, Scotland\u2019s National Academy.
