And American presidents knew it.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2022\/09\/08\/queen-elizabeth-ii-has-died\/8022043001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Queen Elizabeth II<\/a>, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/web-stories\/queen-elizabeth-ii-life-royal-reign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70-year reign <\/a>made her the nation\u2019s longest-ruling monarch, met 13 sitting U.S. presidents over her lifetime, more than any other American or foreign head of state.<\/p>\n<p>Though routinely underestimated and her influence discounted, the queen was a persuasive global leader who helped shape \u2013 and was sometimes shaped by \u2013 her partners in the Oval Office, said veteran journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/staff\/2646358001\/susan-page\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Susan Page<\/a>, the author of a forthcoming book on the unique relationship between Queen Elizabeth and American presidents.<\/p>\n<p>The queen was a skilled diplomat \u2013 \u201creally, one of the world\u2019s great diplomats, and always with the interests of Great Britain in mind \u2013 and also the Commonwealth and some larger world issues,\u201d said Page, USA TODAY&#8217;s Washington bureau chief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat aspect of her legacy has been underestimated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book, titled &#8220;The Queen and Her Presidents,&#8221; will be published by HarperCollins on April 14, 2026, just days before the 100th anniversary of the queen\u2019s birth. It will chronicle her transformation from a shy, anxious princess to a powerful and persuasive leader and will provide candid assessments of America\u2019s commanders-in-chief. It&#8217;s available for preorder on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0FHHSHK25\/?tag=usattrending-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of her reign, Queen Elizabeth, then 25, got some crucial advice from her mentor, Winston Churchill, who told her to \u201cstay close to the Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">&#8216;Used beans&#8217; and &#8216;The Talking Hat&#8217;: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/09\/10\/queen-elizabeths-visits-presidents-often-didnt-go-planned\/8027012001\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queen Elizabeth&#8217;s visits with presidents didn&#8217;t always go as planned<\/a><\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2020\/09\/16\/eisenhower-memorial-prepared-steady-president-not-like-trump-column\/5794013002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dwight Eisenhower<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a>, Elizabeth met every American president in office during her reign, except Lyndon Johnson. (In 1951, when she was still a princess, she also met Harry Truman when she visited the United States on behalf of her ailing father, King George VI.)<\/p>\n<p>Page\u2019s book will detail Elizabeth\u2019s bond with American leaders, including the speculation and the reality surrounding her relationship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump;<\/a> her unexpected and genuine connection with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/04\/03\/barack-obama-pictures\/82800647007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barack Obama<\/a> \u2013 and her surprising admission to him; and her influential friendship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/02\/06\/ronald-reagan-birthday-legacy\/78211561007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ronald Reagan<\/a> during the Cold War, which was built on their shared love of horses and their conflict with Britain\u2019s then-Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/picture-gallery\/news\/world\/2013\/04\/08\/margaret-thatcher-through-the-years\/2062521\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Margaret Thatcher<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the book will look at the queen\u2019s close cooperation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/18\/jfk-assassination-files-released-trump\/82517699007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John F. Kennedy<\/a> and at how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/08\/08\/nixon-resigned-50-years-watergate-trump\/74623866007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Nixon<\/a> sought her help during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2014\/08\/07\/watergate-40-years-anniversary-nixon-resigns-editorials-debates\/13751533\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watergate<\/a> \u2013 and even wanted to make her a relative.<\/p>\n<p>In researching the project, Page interviewed three American presidents (Trump, Obama and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/books\/2025\/06\/02\/bill-clinton-running-gift-white-house\/83989178007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Clinton<\/a>), three prime ministers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2022\/06\/07\/britain-prime-minister-boris-johnson-no-confidence-vote\/7535452001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boris Johnson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2015\/05\/08\/david-cameron-profile-british-election\/70954936\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Cameron<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2022\/09\/06\/liz-truss-queen-elizabeth-boris-johnson-resignation\/7999420001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liz Truss<\/a>) and two first ladies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2025\/07\/09\/michelle-obama-feels-free-barack-obama-podcast\/84518689007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michelle Obama<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/picture-gallery\/news\/politics\/elections\/2015\/01\/02\/hillary-clinton-75-moments\/21198489\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hillary Clinton<\/a>). She also visited eight presidential libraries and interviewed secretaries of state, foreign secretaries, ambassadors, protocol chiefs and historians.<\/p>\n<p>Page, who also has written biographies of former first lady <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/books\/2019\/04\/02\/the-matriarch-barbara-bush-and-the-making-of-an-american-dynasty-susan-page-review\/3335254002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barbara Bush<\/a>, former House Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/books\/2021\/04\/16\/madam-speaker-susan-pages-new-bio-examines-singular-nancy-pelosi\/7215753002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nancy Pelosi<\/a> and journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/books\/2024\/04\/11\/the-rulebreaker-biography-susan-page-barbara-walters\/72755688007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barbara Walters<\/a>, sees a common thread between Elizabeth and the other three women that might not be obvious.<\/p>\n<p>All four are from roughly the same generation and rose to prominence even though there had been no expectation that they would lead momentous lives, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, \u201call four of these women ended up having these big, consequential lives that had an impact on what happened in the world and what happened around them,\u201d Page said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Royal bling: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/09\/18\/gifts-queen-elizabeth-presidents\/10390423002\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">70 years of iconic gifts US presidents exchanged with the queen<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When Elizabeth was born, her uncle, Edward VIII, was expected to become king. He did, but he abdicated less than a year later so he could marry Wallis Simpson, an American. His decision to step down not only meant that Elizabeth\u2019s father would become king, but it also opened the door for her own eventual ascendancy to the throne.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, \u201cthere was not a thought that she was going to be the queen,\u201d Page said.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2022\/09\/08\/queen-elizabeth-health-medical-supervision\/8020533001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died in 2022<\/a>, witnessed the highs and lows of the alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom, from the Suez crisis in 1956 to Brexit six decades later.
