{"id":269679,"date":"2025-07-17T15:47:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T15:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/269679\/"},"modified":"2025-07-17T15:47:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T15:47:15","slug":"eu-triggers-infringement-procedure-against-spain-over-sanchez-power-grab-%e2%94%81-the-european-conservative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/269679\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Triggers Infringement Procedure Against Spain Over S\u00e1nchez\u2019 Power Grab \u2501 The European Conservative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/politics\/news\/brussels-launches-legal-action-against-spain-over-bank-merger-powers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> on Thursday, July 17th, that it had opened an infringement procedure against the socialist government of Spanish PM Pedro S\u00e1nchez for granting itself sweeping powers to block bank mergers, which undermines the financial integrity of the EU.<\/p>\n<p>As Spain is already at a tipping point, and millions are demanding S\u00e1nchez\u2019 resignation, this new situation might speed up the eventual collapse of the government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s move comes after S\u00e1nchez has been blocking the merger of Spain\u2019s second and fourth-largest banks, BBVA and Banco Sabadell, which collectively own nearly \u20ac1 trillion in assets.<\/p>\n<p>According to the formal letter sent by the EU Commission to Madrid, the legal framework that the government set up to block the merger breaches core financial rules of the EU, particularly on the freedom of establishment and movement of capital.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the Commission also criticized S\u00e1nchez for overruling the Spanish Competition Authority (CNMC), which had conditionally approved the bid.<\/p>\n<p>The power grab was prepared with the 2014 banking law and its 2015 implementing decree, which gave the Spanish Ministry of Economy excessive discretionary powers over banking operations\u2014something that falls under the exclusive competence of the European Central Bank within the euro zone.<\/p>\n<p>According to Brussels, this undermines EU financial regulations and legal certainty for cross-border banking deals.<\/p>\n<p>The Spanish government has two months to respond. If the Commission finds Madrid\u2019s reply unsatisfactory, it may take the next steps by issuing a \u2018reasoned opinion\u2019 and referring the country to the EU Court of Justice (ECJ) for breaching EU rules. The Court can then decide on appropriate sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>While there\u2019s no immediate consequence, the procedure could escalate the anti-government protests in Spain, leading to the premature fall of the corrupt socialist government.
