{"id":269693,"date":"2025-07-17T15:54:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T15:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/269693\/"},"modified":"2025-07-17T15:54:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T15:54:09","slug":"germany-and-uk-sign-historic-post-brexit-friendship-treaty-dw-07-17-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/269693\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany and UK sign historic post-Brexit friendship treaty \u2013 DW \u2013 07\/17\/2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Germany and <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/uk-to-lower-voting-age-to-16\/a-73310069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Britain<\/a> on Thursday signed a landmark friendship treaty, 80 years after the end of World War II.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/german-chancellor-merz-goes-into-summer-in-crisis-mode\/a-73275497\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chancellor Friedrich Merz<\/a> and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer sealed the agreement \u2014 largely negotiated by the previous German government \u2014 during a meeting in London on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s in the treaty?<\/p>\n<p>The accord \u2014 dubbed the &#8220;Kensington Treaty&#8221;\u00a0\u2014\u00a0includes plans for close security and defense cooperation, a mutual assistance clause in crises, and visa simplifications for school exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>On defense, the two sides vowed to &#8220;pursue joint export campaigns&#8221; to secure international orders for equipment they co-produce, including the Typhoon Eurofighter jet and the Boxer armored vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement also includes plans to boost connectivity by establishing a new direct rail connection, aiming to deepen economic and people-to-people ties.<\/p>\n<p>Critically for the UK, it also features a pledge by Germany to assist in <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-uk-agree-on-joint-steps-against-people-smuggling\/a-71007986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">combating illegal immigration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement was signed at London&#8217;s V&amp;A Museum, which is named after Queen Victoria and her German husband, Prince Albert.<\/p>\n<p>What did the leaders say about the treaty?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a historic day for German-British relations,&#8221; Merz said after the signing. &#8220;We want to work more closely \u2014 especially after the UK&#8217;s departure from the European Union.&#8221; He called the treaty long overdue and said cooperation would deepen across defense, foreign policy, and economic and domestic affairs.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"73227686\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/73227686_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"British Prime Minister Keir Starmer greets France's President Emmanuel Macron\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>Starmer had welcomed France&#8217;s President Emmanuel Macron in London just a week earlierImage: Isabel Infantes\/REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Merz has repeatedly emphasized the need to keep Britain\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/uk-eu-agree-on-several-deals-at-london-summit\/a-72592342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">close\u00a0to the EU<\/a> following its 2020 exit.
