The shaded area represents &#8230; More data variation.<\/p>\n<p>JUDD et al. 2024\/Science, VAN DER MEER et al. 2025\/Earth and Planetary Science Letters<\/p>\n<p>Two new studies offer the most detailed glimpse yet of how Earth\u2019s climate and sea levels have changed during the <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phanerozoic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phanerozoic\" aria-label=\"Phanerozoic\">Phanerozoic<\/a> \u2014 the latest geologic eon covering the time period from 538.8 million years ago to the present.<\/p>\n<p>The first curve reveals that Earth\u2019s temperature has varied more than previously thought over much of the Phanerozoic eon and also confirms that Earth\u2019s temperature is strongly correlated to carbon-dioxide levels in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>The scientific team from Arizona compiled more than 150,000 published data points, their colleagues at the University of Bristol generated more than 850 <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/climatearchive.org\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawFTw8dleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHcIL7JWUjwp3KahB7_PegRVVaxLR_2xsbesfJYElbf6AH74CsV-r0ZXlvw_aem_gtoC_3ARfWqUVjdXH3MdYw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/climatearchive.org\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawFTw8dleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHcIL7JWUjwp3KahB7_PegRVVaxLR_2xsbesfJYElbf6AH74CsV-r0ZXlvw_aem_gtoC_3ARfWqUVjdXH3MdYw\" aria-label=\"simulations of what Earth\u2019s climate could have looked like at different periods\">simulations of what Earth\u2019s climate could have looked like at different periods<\/a>. Using special data assimilation protocols, the different datasets were combined to create an accurate curve of how Earth\u2019s global temperature has varied over the past 485 million years.<\/p>\n<p>The climate curve starts in the <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-981-19-8861-5_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-981-19-8861-5_5\" aria-label=\"Hirnantian\">Hirnantian<\/a>, a period of major climatic oscillation lasting from approximately 460 to around 420 million years. The coldest period in the analyzed timescale is the <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/environmental-geology-dev.pressbooks.tru.ca\/chapter\/glacial-periods-in-earths-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/environmental-geology-dev.pressbooks.tru.ca\/chapter\/glacial-periods-in-earths-history\/\" aria-label=\"Karoo glaciation\">Karoo glaciation<\/a>, lasting from approximately 360 to 260 million years. But overall, the Phanerozoic was characterized by mild to warm climates, with global mean surface temperatures spanning from 11 to 36 degrees Celsius. In the warmest periods global temperatures did not drop below 25 degrees Celsius. In the last 60 million years, <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0921818117306483\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0921818117306483\" aria-label=\"after a peak during the &quot;Cretaceous Hothouse\">after a peak during the &#8220;Cretaceous Hothouse<\/a>,&#8221; Earth started to cool down. The global average temperature today is about 15 degrees Celsius. The authors also note that the periods of extreme heat were most often linked to elevated levels of the greenhouse gas carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>The second curve shows how sea levels correlate both with tectonic activity \u2014 closing or opening oceanic basins and shifting continents \u2014 and how much water is trapped in ice caps and glaciers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlate tectonics determines the depth of the oceans. If the \u2018bathtub\u2019 becomes shallower, then the water level will rise. Ice caps on continents withhold water from the ocean, but when the ice melts, the \u2018bath water level\u2019 will rise, &#8221; explains study lead author Dr. <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uu.nl\/medewerkers\/DGvanderMeer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.uu.nl\/medewerkers\/DGvanderMeer\" aria-label=\"Douwe van der Meer,\">Douwe van der Meer,<\/a> guest researcher at Utrecht University.<\/p>\n<p>To assess sea level changes, the scientists looked at the prevailing sediment type deposited at the time. <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/claystone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/claystone\" aria-label=\"Claystone\">Claystone<\/a> typically forms in deeper marine settings, while <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/rocksminerals.flexiblelearning.auckland.ac.nz\/rocks\/sandstone.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/rocksminerals.flexiblelearning.auckland.ac.nz\/rocks\/sandstone.html\" aria-label=\"sandstone\">sandstone<\/a> is deposited in shallow basins. This preliminary curve was then combined with data derived from fossils of organisms living in a warm or cool environments, simulations of orbital parameters and <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scotese.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:http:\/\/www.scotese.com\/\" aria-label=\"paleogeographic models\">paleogeographic models<\/a>, visualizing the distribution of land and sea during different geological periods.<\/p>\n<p>With this data, the authors were able to estimate the position of the continents in relation to the poles and the prevailing climate, reconstructing the volume of continental ice caps.<\/p>\n<p>Sea levels were relatively low during the first 400 million years, reflecting the cooler climate and low tectonic activity. During the Carboniferous<strong> <\/strong>(358-298 million years ago) there were very large sea level variations due to a large ice cap covering the landmass of <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/data.aad.gov.au\/aadc\/mapcat\/display_map.cfm?map_id=13401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/data.aad.gov.au\/aadc\/mapcat\/display_map.cfm?map_id=13401\" aria-label=\"Gondwana\">Gondwana<\/a> in the southern hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>During the Cretaceous (145-66 million years ago) the supercontinent of <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/pangaea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/pangaea\" aria-label=\"Pangaea\">Pangaea<\/a> started to break up, and the hothouse climate caused the poles to be free of ice and snow. These two effects resulted in global sea levels being more than 200 meters higher than they are at present.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next 60 million years, Earth has cooled, and approximately 30 million years ago the first ice sheets began to form at the poles.
