{"id":270684,"date":"2025-07-18T00:37:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T00:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/270684\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T00:37:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T00:37:11","slug":"former-elo-members-open-new-production-suite-in-memory-of-bandmate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/270684\/","title":{"rendered":"Former ELO members open new production suite in memory of bandmate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aiir-c-news-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/68797ae6b5d4c.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                                    (L-R) Martin Smith; ELO guitarist, Dave Scott-Morgan and RBC Principal, Stephen Maddock<\/p>\n<p class=\"aiir-c-news-article__abstract\">\n            The memory of Electric Light Orchestra\u2019s keyboardist is being honoured with the opening of a new production suite at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.\n        <\/p>\n<p>Richard Tandy, who died at the age of 76 in April 2024, also has a scholarship established in his name, which was made possible by a donation from his wife Sheila and a fundraising campaign led by ELO founder, Jeff Lynne.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Dave Scott-Morgan, ELO guitarist from 1981-86, and co-founder of the Tandy-Morgan Band with Richard in 1985, hopes the suite will inspire the generation of musicians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cRichard is proof that anyone can plant a small seed and have it grow into a giant oak. Richard was a gifted musician in his own right but his greatest work was the support and influence he brought to the creative process in the studio.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cA great encourager behind the scenes, and a masterful and reliable arbiter of musical and lyrical taste.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The new Richard Tandy Production Suite houses instruments and studio equipment used by Tandy, along with a collection of his gold and platinum records.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>RBC Principal, Stephen Maddock, added: \u201cELO are one of Birmingham\u2019s most famous musical exports. Their creative combination of classical and pop genres was part of the soundtrack to my youth.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cI\u2019m absolutely delighted that there is now a permanent tribute to Richard Tandy and the band here at RBC.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cWe want our students to be inspired to see Richard\u2019s collection of gold and platinum discs and try his instruments and studio equipment to be creative and inventive with music.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>For the opening ceremony, a range of Tandy\u2019s stage clothing and ELO memorabilia was on display. A larger exhibition is planned for later this year, to coincide with a special concert in tribute to his musical legacy.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Richard&#8217;s friend, Martin Smith, joined ELO for their 1986 tour on bass guitar. He added:\u00a0\u201cStudents today may not have heard of ELO, but I\u2019m sure their parents will have!\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThe production suite or scholarship could help grow the next Richard Tandy or ELO.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cSeeing the exhibition was illuminating and really unexpected.
