{"id":271726,"date":"2025-07-18T09:53:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T09:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/271726\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T09:53:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T09:53:12","slug":"good-trouble-lives-on-protests-across-us-against-trump-policies-donald-trump-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/271726\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Good Trouble Lives On\u2019 protests across US against Trump policies | Donald Trump News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">A national day of action has been held to oppose what many see as a rollback of civil rights and liberties.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrations have taken place at more than 1,600 locations around the United States, in protest against President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2025\/7\/10\/trump-didnt-start-the-war-on-the-poor-but-hes-taking-it-to-new-extremes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial policies<\/a> that include mass deportations of immigrants and refugees and cuts to medical insurance, as well as the removal of other safety nets for impoverished people.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cGood Trouble Lives On\u201d refrain that underscored the national day of action on Thursday was inspired by the late congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis, who died in 2020 at the age of 80 following an advanced pancreatic cancer diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>He was the youngest and last survivor of the Big Six civil rights activists, a group led by Martin Luther King Jr. In 1965, a 25-year-old Lewis led some 600 protesters in the Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. Lewis was beaten by police, suffering a skull fracture.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers had called for peaceful protests to take place on the fifth anniversary of Lewis\u2019s death along streets, at courts and other public spaces in cities including Atlanta, New York and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are navigating one of the most terrifying moments in our nation\u2019s history,\u201d Lisa Gilbert, co-president of the nonprofit Public Citizen, said during an online news conference on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all grappling with a rise of authoritarianism and lawlessness within our administration \u2026 as the rights, freedoms and expectations of our very democracy are being challenged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pushback against Trump so far in his second term has centred on deportations and immigration enforcement tactics, as well as access to healthcare.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3844368\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-17T224614Z_947953620_RC2MOFAXL6YD_RTRMADP_3_USA-TRUMP-PROTESTS-1752824668.jpg\" alt=\"People take part in a &quot;Good Trouble Lives On&quot; protest against U.S. President Donald Trump\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/>Protesters oppose mass deportation and the steepest rollbacks of social welfare programmes in the US since their inception [Adam Gray\/Reuters]<\/p>\n<p>The administration has pushed third-party countries to accept deportees, and the African country of Eswatini has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/16\/us-deports-immigrants-to-african-country-of-eswatini-amid-rights-concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed<\/a> this week that it received five individuals deported from the US. The US also completed the deportations of eight men to South Sudan after a judge cleared the way for their transfer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2025\/5\/4\/msf-hospital-bombing-kills-seven-people-in-south-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violence-hit<\/a>\u00a0African country.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s administration has also been actively targeting pro-Palestinian activists. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/10\/mahmoud-khalil-files-20m-claim-against-trump-for-wrongful-detention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mahmoud Khalil<\/a>, a former Columbia University student imprisoned for more than three months, this month filed a wrongful detention claim against Trump seeking $20m in damages.<\/p>\n<p>The so\u2011called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2025\/7\/10\/trump-didnt-start-the-war-on-the-poor-but-hes-taking-it-to-new-extremes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Big, Beautiful Bill<\/a>\u201d also prompted a backlash for slashing health coverage schemes, Medicare and Medicaid, by $930bn over the next decade. It could leave as many as 17\u202fmillion Americans without insurance, in one of the steepest rollbacks of social welfare programmes in the US since their inception in 1935.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, protesters engaged in a tense standoff as federal authorities conducted mass arrests at two Southern California marijuana farms. One farmworker died after falling from a greenhouse roof during a chaotic raid.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers of the June 14 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2025\/6\/15\/trump-holds-military-parade-amid-no-kings-protests-across-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cNo Kings\u201d<\/a> demonstrations said millions of people marched in hundreds of events from New York to San Francisco.
