{"id":272477,"date":"2025-07-18T16:28:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T16:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/272477\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T16:28:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T16:28:11","slug":"i-am-extremely-sad-celebrities-react-to-the-end-of-stephen-colberts-late-show-stephen-colbert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/272477\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I am extremely sad\u2019: celebrities react to the end of Stephen Colbert\u2019s Late Show | Stephen Colbert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Celebrities have expressed disappointment and anger at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/jul\/18\/the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert-to-end-in-2026-as-cbs-cancels-show\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial decision<\/a> to end the long-running Late Show, bringing an end to host Stephen Colbert\u2019s award-winning tenure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The late-night comedy show has been on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/cbs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS<\/a> for 33 years and the news arrived just days after Colbert called out the network\u2019s parent company Paramount for settling a \u201cfrivolous\u201d lawsuit with Donald Trump for $16m. Paramount is seeking approval for a $8.4bn merger with Skydance, a company ran by David Ellison, son of close Trump ally Larry Ellison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Colbert called it a \u201cbig fat bribe\u201d earlier this week and later announced to his audience that the show would be ending next year. \u201cLet me tell you, it is a fantastic job,\u201d he said. \u201cI wish someone else was getting it. And it is a job I am looking forward to doing with this usual gang of idiots for another 10 months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The Late Show received an Emmy nomination earlier this week for talk series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cSorry to hear @CBS is canceling one of the best shows they have,\u201d the actor and director Ben Stiller <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BenStiller\/status\/1946006055038988698\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">wrote<\/a> on X. \u201cWishing all the people who work so hard on that show all the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">His Severance colleague Adam Scott also shared his sentiment. \u201cLove you Stephen,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThis is absolute bullshit and I for one am looking forward to the next 10 months of shows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The writer and director Judd Apatow also wrote in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DMOhWKsxT_G\/?hl=en\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colbert\u2019s Instagram post<\/a>: \u201cMy admiration and appreciation for you is bottomless. Excited to see what other brilliance you put into the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Broadcast journalist Katie Couric added: \u201cI am so upset about this. I need more information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The West Side Story and Evita actor Rachel Zegler wrote: \u201ci am extremely sad. i adore you, stephen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Jon Batiste, the Grammy-winning musician who used to lead Colbert\u2019s band on the show, called him \u201cthe greatest to ever do it\u201d on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The author Stephen King, known for being politically outspoken online, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StephenKing\/status\/1946234459667255563\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">posted<\/a>: \u201cColbert canceled? Please tell me it\u2019s a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The actor John Cusack <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/johncusack\/status\/1946017223782420706\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">shared<\/a> a clip of Colbert on social media and wrote: \u201cHe\u2019s not groveling enough to American fascism \u2013 Larry Ellison needs his tax cuts \u2013 doesn\u2019t need comedians reminding people they are not cattle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Senator Bernie Sanders also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BernieSanders\/status\/1946220710168289457\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">expressed<\/a> similar ire. \u201cCBS\u2019s billionaire owners pay Trump $16 million to settle a bogus lawsuit while trying to sell the network to Skydance,\u201d he wrote. \u201cStephen Colbert, an extraordinary talent and the most popular late night host, slams the deal. Days later, he\u2019s fired. Do I think this is a coincidence? NO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Andy Cohen, the TV personality who hosts late-night show Watch What Happens Live, called it \u201ca sad day\u201d both for late-night television and for CBS. \u201cI\u2019m stunned,\u201d he said to <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/andy-cohen-stephen-colbert-late-night-show-ending-cbs-1236461938\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deadline<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s one of three late-night shows deemed worthy enough for an Emmy nomination. He produces a brilliant show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Colbert\u2019s late-night rival Jimmy Kimmel also weighed in, sharing his frustration with the decision. In an Instagram story poking fun at the network\u2019s much-ridiculed comedy shows, he wrote: \u201cLove you, Stephen. Fuck you and all your Sheldons, CBS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Trump has already taken a victory lap on Truth Social, writing: \u201cI absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!
