{"id":272769,"date":"2025-07-18T19:00:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T19:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/272769\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T19:00:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T19:00:16","slug":"eu-to-triple-travel-permit-fee-to-us23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/272769\/","title":{"rendered":"EU to triple travel permit fee to US$23"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRUSSELS: The digital travel permit for foreigners to enter the European Union should cost \u20ac20 (US$23), almost triple the original planned fee, under a proposal published on Friday (Jul 18).<\/p>\n<p>The adjustment to the yet-to-be implemented ETIAS scheme for visa-exempt nationals comes as the European Commission seeks to boost its financial resources to fund an array of priorities from defence to agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>The change reflects inflation and additional operational costs, the commission said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will also bring the cost for a travel authorisation to the EU in line with similar travel authorisation programmes,&#8221; the EU&#8217;s top executive body said.<\/p>\n<p>Adopted in 2018, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) regulation originally envisaged a fee of \u20ac7.<\/p>\n<p>Britain&#8217;s equivalent, known as ETA, comes with a \u00a316 fee (US$21), while the United States&#8217; ESTA permit costs US$21.<\/p>\n<p>Obtainable online, the European Union&#8217;s ETIAS permit will be required for the bloc&#8217;s 27 countries with the exception of Ireland, as well as for Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.<\/p>\n<p>The permit, valid for three years, will be required for non-EU nationals from countries whose citizens do not need a visa for short stays in Europe, such as Canada, Britain and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Those aged under 18 or over 70 years will be exempt from the fee.<\/p>\n<p>Brussels said the scheme was created to identify security, irregular migration and other risks as well as to facilitate border crossing for regular travellers.<\/p>\n<p>But its implementation, which was supposed to go hand-in-hand with a new automated border check system, has suffered from delays.<\/p>\n<p>The European Parliament and member states have two months to review the new \u20ac20 fee, which will enter into effect as soon as ETIAS becomes operational &#8211; now expected for the last quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>This week the commission proposed a boosted \u20ac2 trillion long-term budget for 2028-2034, which has already upset some of the EU countries that will have to chip in most of the money.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the blueprint, which is subject to negotiation, Brussels said it will seek to raise about \u20ac58 billion a year collecting money directly through measures like its carbon border tax and a levy on electronic waste.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"BRUSSELS: The digital travel permit for foreigners to enter the European Union should cost \u20ac20 (US$23), almost triple&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":272770,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5174],"tags":[2000,299,5187,1699,5006,183],"class_list":{"0":"post-272769","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-eu","8":"tag-eu","9":"tag-europe","10":"tag-european","11":"tag-european-union","12":"tag-tourism","13":"tag-travel"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114875781787829034","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/272769","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=272769"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/272769\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/272770"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=272769"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=272769"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=272769"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
