The government permits certain flags to be flown from rooftops of any size, provided they meet specific criteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Government guidance says all flags must:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_Scarborough-Celebrates-Armed-Forces-Day-2025.jpg\" alt=\"Union Jacks\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Flags can be flown, but there are some exceptions(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">be maintained in a condition that does not impair the overall visual appearance of the site<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">be kept in a safe condition<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">have the permission of the owner of the site on which they are displayed (this includes the Highway Authority if the sign is to be placed on highway land)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">not obscure, or hinder the interpretation of official road, rail, waterway or aircraft signs, or otherwise make hazardous the use of these types of transport<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">be removed carefully where so required by the planning authority<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The full list of flags that do not require consent are:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"NumberedList_numbered-list__oytz_\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Any country\u2019s national flag, civil ensign or civil air ensign<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">The flag of the Commonwealth, the United Nations or any other international organisation of which the United Kingdom is a member<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">A flag of any island, county, district, borough, burgh, parish, city, town or village within the United Kingdom<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">The flag of the Black Country, East Anglia, Wessex, any Part of Lincolnshire, any Riding of Yorkshire or any historic county within the United Kingdom<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">The flag of Saint David (Wales)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">The flag of Saint Patrick (Ireland)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">The flag of any administrative area within any country outside the United Kingdom<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Any flag of His Majesty\u2019s forces<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">The Armed Forces Day flag<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The government adds: \u201cThere are no restrictions on the size of flag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, if you\u2019re flying the flag from a pole protruding from any part of a building other than the roof, there are stricter rules. The Town and Country Planning Regulations 2007 set out that there are rules for a maximum size for flags flying on your house if it\u2019s on a pole, not on the roof.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The government adds: \u201cThe flag may not exceed 2 square metres in size. No restrictions on the size of characters. Consent is required if the flagpole is in a controlled area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Consent is required if you live in a controlled area, too, such as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
