McIlroy was always a long hitter off the tee, but as his nutrition and training regime have developed, he has become one of the most consistent bombers on the PGA Tour.

He had a 300-yard average driving distance in 2010, and that had increased to a whopping 326.3 yards by the 2022/23 season. McIlroy’s length and accuracy off the tee was one of the primary factors contributing to his historic victory at Augusta on Sunday, where he smashed a drive miles past Justin Rose in the decisive play-off hole.

One thing McIlroy swears by to boost his performance in the gym, and therefore off the tee, is the supplement creatine. Medical research has found that creatine – a compound the body makes from protein-rich foods – supplies energy to the muscles and brain.

And McIlroy takes lots of it. While recommendations vary, many gym-goers are advised to take between three and five grams per day. The Northern Irishman takes 20g, and he insists it has helped take him to the next level.

He clued world No. 1 Scheffler in on his creatine regime during the Crypto.com Showdown late last year. During a mic’d-up conversation with Scheffler in the buggy, McIlroy said: “So, there’s a lot of research coming out [saying] that it’s really good for, like, mental.

“I’ll take 10 grams before I work out, and then 10 grams at some other point during the day. It’s such a safe… it’s one of the most studied supplements ever. If you’re working out, it just helps you work out a little harder. It’s my ‘hit it further’ juice.”

Scheffler then told the pundits who were listening in: “He’s going to share some of it with me today for good luck.”

As the two top players in golf’s world rankings, McIlroy and Scheffler are expected to go head-to-head at a number of big tournaments this season. They weren’t far apart at the Masters last week, where Scheffler finished only three shots behind McIlroy before handing over the green jacket he won in 2024.

McIlroy has had the upper hand on Scheffler since the turn of the year. With three tournament wins to Scheffler’s zero, McIlroy is in the form of his life, raking in the prize money and reaping the benefits of his strict gym work.

Rory McIlroy told Scottie Scheffler about a supplement he takes in large quantities, which the newly-crowned Masters champion…

[4106
9759,2826,4365,4366,12829,4287,16530,4288,79,16,15
0":"post-27316","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-golf","8":"tag-creatine","9":"tag-golf","10":"tag-golf-section","11":"tag-golf-news","12":"tag-mcilroy","13":"tag-rory-mcilroy","14":"tag-scheffler","15":"tag-scottie-scheffler","16":"tag-sports","17":"tag-uk","18":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
