{"id":273401,"date":"2025-07-19T00:42:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T00:42:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/273401\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T00:42:19","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T00:42:19","slug":"man-banned-from-glasgow-city-centre-after-palestine-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/273401\/","title":{"rendered":"Man &#8216;banned&#8217; from Glasgow city centre after Palestine protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Sean Clerkin, 64, was arrested and has been charged under the Terrorism Act, after he displayed a placard stating Genocide in Palestine Time to Take Action.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The protester was taken to a police station and held for around three hours.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Speaking to the Glasgow Times after he was released,\u00a0he said he had to sign a &#8220;draconian&#8221;\u00a0undertaking.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said: &#8220;I had to agree not to enter an\u00a0exclusion zone which covers the city centre.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I was charged under section 13 of the Terrorism Act and given a date to appear in court.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI am effectively banned from the city centre for the duration until the court date.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIf I go into the city centre, I will be jailed.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said he will comply with the undertaking.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He added: \u201cI will abide by it but I think it is draconian and we are on the way to a politicised police state.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Clerkin was arrested in Nelson Mandela Place on Friday around noon after he displayed the sign.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>(Image: GT)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The words Palestine and Action were in much larger text than the rest of the sign.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The group Palestine Action is a proscribed organisation in the UK.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Two men displayed the sign and were warned by police officers they were \u201cdemonstrating support for a proscribed organisation\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They were warned that the way the sign was written was deliberately intended to \u201ccircumvent the law\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  When it was displayed again minutes later, as a third protester made a speech, two police officers moved in and made an arrest.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Clerkin was taken to a nearby police van amid shouts of \u201clet him go\u201d from supporters.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The man stated repeatedly as he was taken to the police van: \u201cI am not a terrorist\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The city centre protest on Friday was calling for \u201can end\u00a0to the proscription of Palestine Action and \u201cthe end to genocide in Gaza And Palestine.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Other protesters criticised the arrest.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mick Napier of Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said: \u201cThis is the theatre of the absurd.
