Photo: Instagram \/\/ Screenshot<\/p>\n<p>        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752888909_345_favicon-surf.png\" alt=\"The Inertia\" width=\"30\" height=\"30\" class=\"lazyload\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>You may remember when Mick Fanning fought off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinertia.com\/surf\/mick-fanning-candidly-discusses-the-worlds-most-famous-shark-attack-nerves-and-fame-on-the-eve-of-j-bay-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a great white shark at J-Bay, while the world watched.<\/a><\/strong> The ocean is alive there, full of predators and prey, and yesterday at the World Surf League\u2019s Corona Cero Open J-Bay, one predator put on a real show.<\/p>\n<p>On finals day, a Cape fur seal was spotted in the lineup with an octopus in its mouth. As the camera crew zoomed in, the seal whipped the octopus around in the air. Although it\u2019s just Mother Nature at work, it might be tough for some to watch. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinertia.com\/news\/a-fur-seal-rabies-outbreak-in-south-africa-has-surfers-on-edge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cape fur seals in the area were recently struck by a rabies outbreak<\/a> that had surfers on edge, but it appears that worries have abated for the time being.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOld mate\u2019s found himself some octopus for breakfast and the perfect view right in the middle of the lineup to watch the Corona Open J-Bay,\u201d the WSL wrote in an accompanying caption. \u201cNot a bad morning if you ask us.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 326px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DMP446EBfCP\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>    <script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A good day to be a seal.
