{"id":273940,"date":"2025-07-19T05:41:39","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T05:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/273940\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T05:41:39","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T05:41:39","slug":"meta-says-it-wont-sign-europe-ai-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/273940\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta says it won&#8217;t sign Europe AI agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jakub Porzycki | Nurphoto | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/META\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta Platforms<\/a> declined to sign the European Union&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/ai-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a> code of practice because it is an overreach that will &#8220;stunt&#8221; companies, according to global affairs chief Joel Kaplan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Europe is heading down the wrong path on AI,&#8221; Kaplan wrote in a post Friday on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/joel-kaplan-63905618_europe-is-heading-down-the-wrong-path-on-activity-7351928745668055042-XuF7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>. &#8220;This code introduces a number of legal uncertainties for model developers, as well as measures which go far beyond the scope of the AI Act.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/ai-code-practice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission<\/a>, the executive body of the EU, published a final iteration of its code for general purpose AI models, leaving it up to companies to decide if they want to sign.<\/p>\n<p>The rules, which go into effect next month, create a framework for complying with the AI Act passed by European lawmakers last year. It aims to improve transparency and safety surrounding the technology.<\/p>\n<p>Meta isn&#8217;t the first company to stand up against Europe&#8217;s new AI rulebook.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ASML\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ASML Holding<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AIR-FR\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Airbus<\/a> were among the signatories in a recent letter that called on the EU to delay the code for two years. Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/16\/openai-googles-cloud-chatgpt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI<\/a> committed to signing the <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/global-affairs\/eu-code-of-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">code<\/a> of practice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We share concerns raised by these businesses that this over-reach will throttle the development and deployment of frontier AI models in Europe, and stunt European companies looking to build businesses on top of them,&#8221; Kaplan wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Kaplan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/02\/meta-is-replacing-head-of-global-affairs-ahead-of-trump-inauguration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replaced<\/a> former global affairs chief Nick Clegg earlier this year. He previously served as vice president of U.S. policy at Facebook and was a staffer in President George W.
