Paul Scholes rather inadvertently summed up the very different directions taken by arch Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United this week.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Old Trafford icon was asked to name the best player in every position at both the current moment and also across the entirety of football history. <\/p>\n

Now, it goes without saying really, but no one in Ruben Amorim\u2019s current Red Devils selection was ever going to get a mention from Scholes in the \u2018current\u2019 section of the debate. <\/p>\n

While Scholes labels two former Manchester United teammates Peter Schmeichel, Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo as the finest goalkeeper, defender and winger to play the game, the \u2018current\u2019 part was dominated by Premier League winners-in-waiting Liverpool<\/a> and last year\u2019s European Champions Real Madrid.<\/p>\n

The gap between the two rivals has seldom been larger.<\/p>\n

Mo Salah signed a new contract at Liverpool<\/a> last week, much to the dismay of a Man United fanbase sick of the sight of the Egyptian\u2019s chiselled abs. Salah has famously accumulated more yellow cards for tearing off his shirt in celebration than United have Old Trafford goals against their North West neighbours since the 2017\/18 season.<\/p>\n

Scholes gives Real Madrid\u2019s Vinicius Jr the nod over the Red Devils\u2019 free-scoring nemesis, though he could deny two other modern-day Liverpool superstars \u2018best in the world\u2019 billing.<\/p>\n

When quizzed on the identity of the world\u2019s best goalkeeper, Scholes could look no further than Alisson Becker<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Virgil van Dijk<\/a> was also credited as the planet\u2019s finest defender by a man who was watched on in a sickening shade of envy as Liverpool leave his beloved Manchester United choking on their dust.<\/p>\n

Not that Salah will be losing any sleep over Scholes\u2019 omission. The talismanic winger making space on his mantelpiece for both a Premier League winners\u2019 medal and another Golden Boot. <\/p>\n

Yet, it must be said that Vinicius Jr can only dream of putting up the sort of numbers the Liverpool star is capable of right now.<\/p>\n

Arne Slot delighted as Mo Salah commits his future at Anfield <\/p>\n

Vinicius has only 11 La Liga goals to his name this term. Salah has 27 in the Premier League. Across all competitions, meanwhile, Salah is outscoring the Brazilian by thirteen while providing nine more assists.<\/p>\n

His recent goal drought aside \u2013 three games without one in the Premier League his longest stretch of the entire campaign \u2013 it\u2019s no wonder Arne Slot viewed retaining Salah\u2019s services as a must.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a good message [about Liverpool\u2019s plans],\u201d Slot said ahead of Sunday\u2019s 2-1 victory over West Ham United. \u201cWe want to keep a very good player like\u00a0Mo Salah\u00a0at this club.
