{"id":274062,"date":"2025-07-19T06:49:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T06:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/274062\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T06:49:19","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T06:49:19","slug":"9-fantastic-photos-which-capture-glasgow-fair-weekend-in-the-90s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/274062\/","title":{"rendered":"9 fantastic photos which capture Glasgow Fair weekend in the 90s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RIDES on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/topics\/glasgow-green\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Glasgow Green;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Glasgow Green<\/a>, pony rides on the Clyde coast and old &#8220;mobile&#8221;\u00a0telephones \u2026 as the Glasgow Fair weekend kicks off, this is what it looked like almost 35 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The traditional Fair Fortnight holiday marked the two weeks in July when the whole city closed down for a summer break.<\/p>\n<p>In the days before foreign travel was as prevalent, city families headed to the coast \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ayradvertiser.com\/news\/ayr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ayr;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Ayr<\/a>, Prestwick, Troon and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ardrossanherald.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Saltcoats;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Saltcoats<\/a> \u2013 or the islands \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ardrossanherald.com\/news\/arran\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Arran;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Arran<\/a>, Cumbrae and Bute.<\/p>\n<p>(Image: Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert)<\/p>\n<p>They also made the most of entertainment on their doorstep \u2013 mainly the fairground rides and shows at Glasgow Green.<\/p>\n<p>Photographer Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert captured a collection of images of the Glasgow Fair back in 1991, which he has now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/topics\/pubs-and-bars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:pub;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">pub<\/a>lished in the latest of his series of zines.<\/p>\n<p>(Image: Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert)<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy, who grew up on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/topics\/southside\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Southside;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Southside<\/a> of the city, travels the world on a variety of high profile commissions and his archive \u2013 almost a million photos \u2013 was recently acquired by the University of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/st-andrews\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:St Andrews;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">St Andrews<\/a>. He was official photographer for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Queen\u2019s Baton Relay.<\/p>\n<p>(Image: Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrinting these zines of my archival work is one way of giving back the images to the people in them, to give the photos\u00a0new life, and bring them to new audiences,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>(Image: Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert)<\/p>\n<p>So far, he has published 10 zines, all available from his website.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy took the Fair photos on Glasgow Green and at Ayr beach in 1991, when he was just starting out in his freelance career after his studies at Glasgow College of Building and Printing.<\/p>\n<p>(Image: Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really just learning my craft then, and it was the start of a career which has taken me around the world,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it interesting to look back on these photos and see how things have changed. In one picture we can see the Queen Elizabeth Square flats in the Gorbals that were demolished in 1993.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ NEXT:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids seem to be having simple fun, making their own amusement, or being amused by simpler things,\u00a0perhaps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He adds, smiling: \u201cOr perhaps that is a sign of my aging \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Image: Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert)<\/p>\n<p>Some photos are a reminder of the politics of the time &#8211; the Hall of Magic Mirrors on the Green, for example, has Margaret Thatcher and Neil Kinnock as paintings on the exterior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps that shows us that back then politicians were around for a lot longer, and were household names and easily recognised, instead of the revolving doors of the Prime Minister\u2019s office and Government\u00a0in recent years,\u201d adds Jeremy.<\/p>\n<p>(Image: Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s interesting to see the pony rides on Ayr beach, which you may not see so often now, and a young boy on a payphone on a British Telecom mobile phone facility. That\u2019s fascinating, especially as now everyone has a smartphone in their pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Image: Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert)<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy adds: \u201cI love that photos like these capture the times, things we take for granted which years, or decades later, become fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I love about photography, and why I feel it is important to photograph the common, everyday around us,\u00a0so that in years to come we can see the changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy is currently focussing on \u201cphotographing Glasgow and Scotland, documenting and capturing the everyday\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029VaA1fJO3rZZZLMMFFK0U\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ffc6bf83b0c3f8542b8703ad4c128430.png\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been great to hear from people who recognise themselves in the images, or find relatives and colleagues in the photos,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hear some lovely comments from people.
