{"id":274157,"date":"2025-07-19T07:38:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T07:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/274157\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T07:38:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T07:38:10","slug":"britains-got-talent-mama-g-has-libraries-events-postponed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/274157\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain\u2019s Got Talent Mama G has libraries events postponed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Mama G is a pantomime dame,\u00a0Britain&#8217;s Got Talent contestant and LGBTQ+ campaigner\u00a0who has been performing at libraries in Suffolk for the last seven years.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She was also set to perform at Haverhill, Stowmarket, Lowestoft and Gainsborough Library, near Ipswich, on\u00a0August 12 to 14 this year.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  However, she has now been told that by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eadt.co.uk\/news\/25273458.suffolk-community-libraries-update-catalogue-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suffolk Community Libraries<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0which are run by Suffolk County Council &#8211; that the\u00a0events will\u00a0be postponed until a risk assessment is carried out\u00a0amid\u00a0negative reactions and protests to similar events\u00a0across the country.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A spokesman from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eadt.co.uk\/topics\/suffolk-county-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suffolk County Council<\/a> referenced recent\u00a0protests at libraries and children&#8217;s centres in Dundee,\u00a0Reading, Cardiff, Bristol and North Walsham.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Stowmarket Library was among the four venues Mama G was set to perform at in August.\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Stowmarket Library was among the four venues Mama G was set to perform at in August. (Image: Contributed)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;What I&#8217;m experiencing is definitely some sort of censorship, which is really dangerous&#8221;, said\u00a0Mama G.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Pantomime is a great British tradition and something quite uniquely British, and we should be proud of that &#8211; and proud to be ourselves.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;By cancelling this event, you&#8217;re only\u00a0allowing the far-right to believe that their views are correct.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It&#8217;s definitely\u00a0part of a\u00a0momentum to the right in this country at the moment, and it this is definitely politically and economically driven.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;However, I think it&#8217;s really important that events like this happen, because we need to show people that everyone has the right to exist.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Mama G was set to perform in Haverhill, Stowmarket, Ipswich and Lowestoft. \" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Mama G was set to perform in Haverhill, Stowmarket, Ipswich and Lowestoft. (Image: Mama G)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mama G believes this was a &#8220;political decision&#8221; by\u00a0Suffolk County Council, rather than the library service, and said that\u00a0Suffolk librarians have always been \u201creally supportive\u201d of her.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  However, Krystal Vittles, head of library service for Suffolk Community Libraries, said: \u201cDue to extreme negative reactions to similar events in other areas, including protests and disruption, we have postponed these events and are currently carrying out an additional risk assessment.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;This is an operational decision as a precaution to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff, residents, and local communities.\u201d<img   alt=\"Krystal Vittles, Head of Library Service for Suffolk Community Libraries.\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Krystal Vittles, Head of Library Service for Suffolk Community Libraries. (Image: Sarah Lucy Brown)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This comes after councillors gathered outside the county\u00a0council&#8217;s headquarters\u00a0to protest the decision to remove rainbow flags from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eadt.co.uk\/news\/25244745.suffolk-county-council-criticised-pride-flag-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outside its offices during Pride month<\/a>, unlike in recent years.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The authority said the change to the flag policy was to reflect the\u00a0traditions and values of the Suffolk community.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The policy will not promote\u00a0political, social, religious, awareness, commercial interests\u00a0or advocacy campaigns.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Union and county council flags will be flown permanently, with exceptions for Suffolk Day, St Edmund\u2019s Day, Armed Forces Day and in response to international incidents.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  John Cook, Ipswich Borough councillor, for Alexandra, attended the protest and was critical of the decision.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said: &#8220;I&#8217;ve never seen Mama G perform and cannot comment on her act.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;However the fact that she has performed at Suffolk Library venues over a number of years with positive reviews and no &#8220;far-right&#8221; protests, speaks for itself.&#8221;\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"John and Adele Cook joined the Pride flags at Endeavour House earlier this year.\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>John and Adele Cook joined the Pride flags at Endeavour House earlier this year.
