{"id":274262,"date":"2025-07-19T08:35:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T08:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/274262\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T08:35:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T08:35:09","slug":"syrian-security-forces-deploy-in-suwayda-us-brokers-israel-syria-ceasefire-syrias-war-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/274262\/","title":{"rendered":"Syrian security forces deploy in Suwayda; US brokers Israel-Syria ceasefire | Syria&#8217;s War News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">US ambassador says truce was \u2018supported\u2019 by the US and \u2019embraced\u2019 by Turkiye, Jordan and Syria\u2019s neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>Syria\u2019s security forces have begun deploying in the restive southern province of Suwayda, a Ministry of Interior spokesperson has said, where heavy fighting between Druze and Bedouin armed groups and government forces has left hundreds dead.<\/p>\n<p>The Syrian presidency announced on Saturday an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire. \u201cIn light of the critical circumstances the country is going through, and out of concern to spare Syrian blood, preserve the unity of Syrian territory, the safety of its people, and in response to national and humanitarian responsibility, the Presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic announces a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire,\u201d a statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Presidency urges everyone to allow space for the Syrian state, its institutions, and forces to implement this ceasefire responsibly, in a manner that ensures the consolidation of stability and the cessation of bloodshed,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>The developments were preceded hours earlier by the United States envoy announcing that Israel and Syria had agreed to a ceasefire, after days of bloodshed in the predominantly Druze area.<\/p>\n<p>US ambassador to Turkiye Tom Barrack\u2019s announcement was aimed at drawing an uneasy truce between the neighbours after days of air attacks and sectarian bloodshed in the Suwayda region.<\/p>\n<p>Barrack said in a post on X early on Saturday that the ceasefire between Syria and Israel was \u201csupported\u201d by Washington and \u201cembraced\u201d by Turkiye, Jordan and Syria\u2019s neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>In his post announcing the ceasefire, Barrack said the US called \u201cupon Druze, Bedouins, and Sunni to put down their weapons and together with other minorities build a new and united Syrian identity in peace and prosperity with its neighbours\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There has been no comment yet from Syrian or Israeli officials.<\/p>\n<p>An Israeli official, who declined to be named, told reporters on Friday that in light of the \u201congoing instability in southwest Syria\u201d, Israel had agreed to allow the \u201climited entry of the [Syrian] internal security forces into Suwayda district for the next 48 hours\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/16\/israel-bombards-syrias-damascus-as-us-says-steps-agreed-to-end-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched heavy air attacks<\/a> on Syria\u2019s Ministry of Defence in the heart of Damascus, and also hit Syrian government forces in the country\u2019s Suwayda region.<\/p>\n<p>Israel claims it launched its attacks to protect Syria\u2019s Druze minority in Suwayda, where ethnically charged clashes have been ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the Druze, who number about one million in Syria \u2013 mostly concentrated in Suwayda \u2013 and about 150,000 in Israel, as \u201cbrothers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A ceasefire agreement mediated by the US, Turkiye and Arab countries was reached between Druze leaders and the Syrian government on Wednesday. Israel, however, launched air raids on Syria the same day, killing at least three people and wounding 34.<\/p>\n<p>Following the Israeli attacks, Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa said in a televised speech early on Thursday that protecting the country\u2019s Druze citizens and their rights was a priority, and though Syria would prefer to avoid a conflict with Israel, it was not afraid of war.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Sharaa added that Syria would overcome attempts by Israel to tear the country apart through its aggression.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy fighting again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/18\/israel-reportedly-targets-bedouin-convoy-in-syria-after-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flared up<\/a> between the Druze and Bedouin tribes in Suwayda on Friday, and Damascus has redeployed a dedicated force to restore calm in the Druze-majority governorate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"US ambassador says truce was \u2018supported\u2019 by the US and \u2019embraced\u2019 by Turkiye, Jordan and Syria\u2019s neighbours.
