{"id":274293,"date":"2025-07-19T08:49:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T08:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/274293\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T08:49:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T08:49:10","slug":"world-athletics-championships-2029-uk-government-backs-london-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/274293\/","title":{"rendered":"World Athletics Championships 2029: UK government backs London bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In June more than 100 of Britain&#8217;s most renowned athletes wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/athletics\/articles\/c8e6j5xl566o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urging the government to back London&#8217;s bid<\/a> to host the World Athletics Championships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It came after concerns that a bid could be at risk, with uncertainty over the estimated \u00a345m that government was being asked for amid spending cuts, despite claims that the event would deliver \u00a3400m of economic impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The championships were not referenced when ministers unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/articles\/cqjqrnjy2q7o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">half a billion pounds of investment<\/a> into sporting events in a spending review last month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, talks have been taking place with UK Athletics and UK Sport, and Starmer said he is &#8220;delighted to support the bid&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Bringing the World Athletics Championships to the UK would be a moment of great national pride, building on our global reputation for hosting memorable sporting events that showcase the very best talent,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Hosting these championships would not only unlock opportunities for UK athletes, but it would inspire the next generation to get involved and pursue their ambitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The event would provide a boost for UK businesses and support jobs as well as bring our communities together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Jack Buckner, CEO of UK Athletics, said: &#8220;After superb medal hauls over the last few years on the world, Olympic and Paralympic stage, athletics in the UK is on an upward trajectory, with new partners, record participation and sold-out stadia.
