{"id":274744,"date":"2025-07-19T12:52:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T12:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/274744\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T12:52:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T12:52:09","slug":"chess-players-battle-it-out-in-tournament-on-train","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/274744\/","title":{"rendered":"Chess players battle it out in tournament on train"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A TRAIN to Lichfield has been the unusual venue for a chess tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The West Midlands Railway service from Birmingham New Street saw eight players battle it out in three rounds while the train travelled along the Cross City Line.<\/p>\n<p>The event yesterday (18th July) to mark International Chess Day.<\/p>\n<p>Jonny Wiseman, West Midlands Railway\u2019s customer experience director, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe introduction of our Class 730 fleet onto the Cross City Line last year brought modern features such as intelligent air-con, Wi-Fi and open gangways for a spacious feel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing we wanted to shine a spotlight on is the addition of tables, which weren\u2019t available in the previous fleet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur passengers can use these for more than checking emails.
