{"id":27499,"date":"2025-04-17T12:22:09","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T12:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/27499\/"},"modified":"2025-04-17T12:22:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T12:22:09","slug":"ex-springboks-coach-we-messed-up-ruan-pienaar-in-this-country-planet-rugby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/27499\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-Springboks coach: &#8216;We messed up Ruan Pienaar in this country&#8217; : Planet Rugby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Former Springboks coach Peter de Villiers believes that he and Sharks coach John Plumtree \u201cmessed up\u201d with Ruan Pienaar and reveals his frank conversation with Schalk Burger.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Pienaar was part of Jake White\u2019s 2007 World Cup-winning Springboks squad and would go on to represent South Africa under his successors De Villiers and Heyneke Meyer.<\/p>\n<p>In total, he played 88 Test matches for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/south-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Springboks<\/a> between 2006 and 2015 while becoming a fan favourite at Irish club Ulster and also starring at Montpellier before returning to South Africa in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tag\/ruan-pienaar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pienaar<\/a> was the last member of the 2007 World Cup squad to hang up his boots, doing so at the age of 40 last year, and while he enjoyed an illustrious career, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tag\/peter-de-villiers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">De Villiers<\/a> believes that he could have been even better.<\/p>\n<p>Frank talk with Burger<\/p>\n<p>During the early stages of his career, Pienaar impressed with his versatility, starting Test matches at scrum-half, fly-half and full-back while he also had cameos off the bench on the wing.<\/p>\n<p>However, he would later settle down in the scrum-half role, particularly after Morne Steyn\u2019s heroics in the second Test against the British and Irish Lions after he replaced Pienaar at fly-half to kick the winning penalty.<\/p>\n<p>In a podcast appearance reflecting on his time as Springboks head coach, De Villiers revealed his selection policy before singling out his mistake with Pienaar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t look at talent because talent has a sell-by date,\u201d he explained on the <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SB9Zun9sHC4\" target=\"_blank\">Behind the Ruck<\/a> podcast with ex-Springboks Rudy Paige and Juan de Jongh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went out and looked for potential because potential is the thing that you can do better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"px-3 xs:px-4 mt-3 mb-2 font-semibold leading-snug text-base text-title\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/news\/phil-vickery-reveals-moms-brutal-text-after-scrum-disaster-against-springboks-great-tendai-beast-mtawarira\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phil Vickery reveals mom\u2019s brutal text after scrum disaster against Springboks great Tendai \u2018Beast\u2019 Mtawarira<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"px-3 xs:px-4 mt-3 mb-2 font-semibold leading-snug text-base text-title\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/news\/matt-williams-refuses-to-shut-up-about-bomb-squad-tactics-as-he-speculates-over-steven-kitshoff-retirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt Williams refuses to \u2018shut up\u2019 about Bomb Squad tactics as he speculates over Steven Kitshoff retirement<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what you can\u2019t measure, you can\u2019t make better. You can\u2019t measure talent but you can measure potential and the guy with the most potential will be the guy that will be there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke to Schalk Burger one day and I said: \u2018Schalk you\u2019re close to being dropped now\u2019 and he said: \u2018But look at my game, I\u2019m better than\u2026\u2019 and he mentioned the names.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said to him: \u2018That\u2019s true but you are playing almost 30% below your potential so I\u2019m dropping you because you\u2019re not giving me 100%, that guy will still be weaker than you but he\u2019s giving 100% to the team\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natural fly-half<\/p>\n<p>This prompted a question from Paige who asked the former head coach about the player he coached with the most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen players are coming into the Springboks, everyone has potential, but the player with the most untapped potential was Ruan Pienaar,\u201d De Villiers stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe messed up Ruan Pienaar in this country, me and the Sharks coach [John Plumtree], because they had a fly-half Thierry Lacroix [meant Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Michalak], they brought him in and made Pienaar a scrum-half.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Pienaar was a natural fly-half, he was such a good rugby player that you can play anywhere and he will be better than some of the players that play there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut under pressure, he would fold in any other position except at fly-half.
