Sir Keir Starmer has been slammed after it has emerged that Labour is refusing to rule out plans for a \u201cone-for-one\u201d migrant removals agreement<\/a> with France.<\/p>\n

The pilot scheme could see a person deported from the UK in exchange for the French sending another individual across the Channel.<\/p>\n

The UK and other European countries are \u201cexploring fresh and innovative measures to dismantle the business models of the criminal smuggling gangs,\u201d Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood said.<\/p>\n

She said that discussions are \u201congoing\u201d but did not specifically say what a future deal could look like.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Sky News, Greenwood said Labour are \u201cfocused on fixing the broken asylum system\u201d that they have inherited from the Tories via the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that we\u2019re only going to be able to fix that\u2026 It\u2019s not a short-term issue, this is going to take really hard work to tackle those organised gangs that are preying on people, putting their lives in danger as they try to cross the Channel to the UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, that\u2019s going to involve conversations with our counterparts on the European continent.\u201d<\/p>\n

France\u2019s Interior Ministry told the BBC that the scheme would be based on a \u201cone-for-one principle\u201d, and that the country is trying to \u201cdiscourage migrants and smuggling networks from attempting to reach the UK from France\u201d.<\/p>\n

Chris Philp MP, Shadow Home Secretary, said that the new proposal \u201cwon\u2019t even reduce numbers arriving\u201d and that Labour\u2019s pledge to smash the gangs \u201clies in tatters\u201d.<\/p>\n

He claimed: \u201cThis plan won\u2019t work because it will only see \u2018small numbers\u2019 of illegal immigrants returned to France. By definition, the vast majority crossing the channel illegally will get to stay in the UK – so there is no deterrent.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only way to deter these illegal crossings is to remove everyone who arrives. That\u2019s why we had a plan ready to do this – Rwanda – but Labour scrapped it before it started, with no replacement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new proposal won\u2019t even reduce numbers arriving – because for each illegal immigrant send back to France, another will come to the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said that under Starmer\u2019s leadership, 2025 has become the \u201cworst year on record for illegal Channel crossings\u201d.<\/p>\n

Reform UK MP Lee Anderson added: \u201cInstead of negotiating trade-style agreements concerning migrants, the focus should be on securing and closing our borders.<\/p>\n
