At the start of the day he was 7:24 behind yellow jersey wearer Tadej Poga\u010dar.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Double Olympic champion Evenepoel, who won the stage five time trial in Caen, cut a despondent figure after finishing 12th in the Peyragudes TT, but he couldn\u2019t identify why his climbing performances had been so lacklustre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Tom Steels, Soudal Quick-Step\u2019s lead sports director at the race, told TNT Sports that Evenepoel \u201cdidn\u2019t feel great&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;He hoped for the best, he hoped it would turn at a moment, but it didn\u2019t turn,&#8221; he continued. He also didn\u2019t have the legs to suffer. And then I also think it\u2019s wise not to continue and [instead] recover well. He still has come goals this year and if he continues in the condition he had, maybe the rest of the season is lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u201cHe is not himself. It\u2019s the third day in a row that he doesn\u2019t feel great and you have to be very careful not to go over the limit and lose months instead of days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Twelve months ago Evenepoel finished third at his maiden Tour and won the white jersey as the best young rider. He was expected to once again win the same classification, and possibly challenge Poga\u010dar and Vingegaard for yellow. But after losing 39 seconds in crosswinds on day one, the Belgian has never looked like contending for the overall title.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u201cHe was very disappointed that he had to leave the Tour,\u201d Steels went on. \u201cHe was world champion on the road [in 2022], he is time trial world champion, and I think that [September\u2019s World Championships in Rwanda] is his next goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Evenepoel has also been the subject of<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/well-talk-after-the-tour-de-france-soudal-quick-step-address-remco-evenepoel-transfer-rumours\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/well-talk-after-the-tour-de-france-soudal-quick-step-address-remco-evenepoel-transfer-rumours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> intense speculation<\/a> surrounding his future, with reports saying that he is set to leave Quick-Step early at the end of this season and join Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.
