could be a sign of deadly brain disorder &#8211; and how to tell if you&#8217;re at risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A doctor has warned that scores of headache sufferers could have a hidden condition that can cause seizures, incontinence and life-long disability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But medics too often mistake their symptoms for harmless stress headaches, leaving them to miss out on treatment, according to GP Dr Ahmed Abd Elbary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Around one in 1000 people have a chiari malformation, where the lower part of the brain pushes through the skull into the spinal canal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The problem varies in severity, but in some cases, it can cause significant damage to the spinal cord, leading to difficulties walking and using the toilet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The malformation of the brain can also trigger potentially life-threatening seziures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In an <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"class\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DHwJzTIKyGa\/\">Instagram reel<\/a>\u00a0watched more than 27,000 times, GP Dr Ahmed Abd Elbary explained how to tell if headaches could be the sign of the condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The telltale symptom is &#8216;chronic&#8217; headaches &#8216;with acute episodes on top of the chronic headache,&#8217; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Headaches may get worse when you sneeze, bend over or cough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u00a0&#8216;There can be other symptoms as well including dizziness, swallowing problems, neck pain, feeling sick, difficulty sleeping and sometimes even <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/depression\/index.html\" id=\"mol-d58e5ff0-1157-11f0-9cc3-11a750109736\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;If you&#8217;re experiencing headaches that aren&#8217;t getting better and have got any of these symptoms, bring it up with your doctor next time you see them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;If you always suffer with headaches and nothing&#8217;s making them better, they&#8217;re getting worse then you may be suffering from it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Elbary added that the lack of availability of MRI scans \u2014 the tests used to diagnose the condition \u2014 is preventing many from getting a diagnosis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He explained that a patient he saw that week had been diagnosed with the condition after suffering severe headaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;It made me wonder how many people are missed, not being diagnosed after having headaches,&#8217; of the condition, Dr Elbary added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Known medically as\u00a0syringomyelia \u2014\u00a0where a fluid-filled cavity called a syrinx develops in the spinal cord \u2014\u00a0 it\u00a0can damage the spinal cord if not treated promptly, the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/nhs\/index.html\" id=\"mol-eb656e20-1159-11f0-9cc3-11a750109736\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Those with the complication may also experience problems using their hands, difficulty walking, pain, and problems with bladder or bowel control.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Syringomyelia treatment often focuses on managing symptoms, preventing further spinal cord damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Elbary added: &#8216;Chiari malformation on its own is not life threatening and if the symptoms aren&#8217;t that bad, generally they can be managed with medication.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;However, in some cases surgery is needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I just think it is difficult to get the diagnosis especially in England, when getting an MRI scan or even me as a GP, referring for an MRI scan is proving more and more difficult.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Any new headaches or new symptoms need to get investigated.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-ca0b19da7337e87b\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/93427335-14568409-Ms_Rolstone_recalled_suffering_blackouts_as_a_teenager_which_she-m-18_174377174003.jpeg\" height=\"866\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Ms Rolstone recalled suffering 'blackouts' as a teenager, which she dismissed - but doctors later informed her she'd been experiencing seizures.\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Ms Rolstone recalled suffering &#8216;blackouts&#8217; as a teenager, which she dismissed &#8211; but doctors later informed her she&#8217;d been experiencing seizures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It comes as a growing number of Brits have recently told how they were diagnosed with\u00a0Chiari malformation, after\u00a0spending most of their lives battling mysterious symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In December,\u00a0Charlie Rolstone, 41, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"class\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-14221161\/motion-sickness-sign-brain-condition-deadly.html\" rel=\"noopener\">said she had been plagued<\/a> with &#8216;subtle&#8217; health problems, including migraines and severe motion sickness triggered by watching television and looking down at her phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, the jewellery business owner from Hertfordshire &#8216;ignored&#8217; the symptoms during her teenage years, believing they were &#8216;quirks&#8217; that she&#8217;d &#8216;grow out&#8217; of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It was only after she collapsed on her way home from the pub in September 2021 that her partner rushed her to hospital where tests eventually discovered she had the condition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Whenever I cough, I get a very piercing pain in my head; covering the back of my skull,&#8217; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;It only lasts for, maybe, 30 seconds, but it&#8217;s enough to make me grab my head.
