{"id":276694,"date":"2025-07-20T06:19:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T06:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/276694\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T06:19:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T06:19:10","slug":"plans-gathered-to-save-graves-from-coastal-erosion-in-happisburgh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/276694\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans gathered to save graves from coastal erosion in Happisburgh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">While Happisburgh might be seen as a pilot project, it would not be the first church \u2013 or graveyard \u2013 to be lost to the sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">When churches at nearby Eccles and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/travel\/article\/20220227-dunwich-the-british-town-lost-to-the-sea\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at Dunwich, Suffolk<\/a>, fell victim to shifting coastlines, graves were left to be exposed by the erosion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We cannot allow that to happen,&#8221; added Blathwayt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The fate of the 15th Century church and graveyard has been raised during meetings with villagers and the Diocese of Norwich, which has responsibility for the site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">As part of these talks, parishioners have considered decommissioning the graveyard so no more burials could take place there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A Diocese of Norwich spokeswoman said: &#8220;This is not a new problem in the Diocese of Norwich.
