But an upcoming total lunar eclipse is sure to blow these previous cosmic views out of the water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A total lunar eclipse will be visible over the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"UK Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">UK <\/a>in just a few short weeks, on September 7, although it won&#8217;t be visible for long. FALLON\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth lies directly between the Sun and the Moon, and the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/scotland-now\/machine-helped-neil-armstrong-step-35577235.amp\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"MoonLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Moon<\/a> lies in the shadow of the Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">For a total lunar eclipse to occur, all three of these celestial bodies need to lie in a straight line. When this happens, the Moon passes through the darkest part of the Earth\u2019s shadow, which is called the umbra, according to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rmg.co.uk\/stories\/space-astronomy\/lunar-eclipse-guide\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Royal Museums Greenwich.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Museums Greenwich.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Moon will turn red during a total lunar eclipse because it is illuminated by light that has passed through the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere, and has then been bent back towards the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>When is the next total lunar eclipse?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The next total lunar eclipse will occur in a few weeks on September 7, and it will be visible from the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Moon will rise above the horizon just in time for us to see it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Its maximum will occur at 7.33pm BST from the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"UK,Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">UK,<\/a> with the eclipse&#8217;s actual maximum at 7.11pm when the Moon is below our horizon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Moon will then gradually move out of Earth&#8217;s umbra until 9.55pm.<\/p>\n<p>How can you spot the total lunar eclipse?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Because the Moon will be <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/exact-time-you-should-look-35531042\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"low on the horizon Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">low on the horizon <\/a>and quite difficult to see, a high point with a clear view to the East will be necessary to fully see the eclipse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you can&#8217;t get up high, any areas with a clear horizon will be ideal to see this low-hanging moon and its eclipse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">There are several Scottish spots that are ideal for viewing the sky with a clear horizon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Here are some of the best places to catch the lunar eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>Beaches<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A beach is one of the best places to go for an unobstructed horizon, and Scotland is home to many.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The best beach for stargazing, however, is <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-beach-named-best-place-30128223\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Luskentyre BeachLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Luskentyre Beach<\/a> on the west coast of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/scotland-now\/beautiful-scottish-island-seeking-couple-29728932\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HarrisLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Harris<\/a> in the Outer Hebrides. This beach&#8217;s lack of light pollution has led to it being named one of the best in the whole of the UK for observing the wonders of the night sky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">For those on the mainland, almost any beach will be a great spot for catching the eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>Plains<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Perhaps harder to find in the rolling hills of Scotland, a grassy field or plain is another perfect choice of place for amateur stargazers to see the low-down lunar eclipse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Large, flat areas of land are more commonly found in the lowlands of Scotland compared to the mountains of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/highland-council\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Highlands.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Highlands.<\/a> If you live nearby any farmland or wide open fields, you may be in proximity to a great viewing spot.<\/p>\n<p>Mountains or hills<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you can&#8217;t find any flat low land due to Scotland&#8217;s vibrant landscape of rolling hills, you could consider climbing high enough that they won&#8217;t obstruct the skyline.
