{"id":278304,"date":"2025-07-20T21:16:36","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T21:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/278304\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T21:16:36","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T21:16:36","slug":"movement-the-key-to-tackling-kids-mental-health-crisis-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/278304\/","title":{"rendered":"Movement the key to tackling kids mental health crisis in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">A major Australian study has found that regular movement, even unstructured play or casual activity, can significantly reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in children and teenagers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Researchers at the University of South Australia reviewed 375 clinical trials involving more than 38,000 young people aged between five and 18.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Their findings show that physical activity has a powerful impact on mental health, and the benefits can appear within weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-178igh4-StyledParagraph e1s06mna1\">Know the news with the 7NEWS app: <a class=\"css-cvgehw-StyledContextualLink e1s06mna0\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/app?utm_source=7NEWS&amp;utm_medium=contextual-link-app&amp;utm_campaign=7news-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download today <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/static\/media\/right-red-arrow.92bca5db.svg\" alt=\"Download today\" height=\"14\" width=\"20\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe found that when children and teenagers moved more, through play, sport or exercise, it significantly reduced depression and anxiety,\u201d said lead researcher <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/news\/half-of-aussie-kids-are-struggling-could-this-be-the-breakthrough--c-19408837\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Ben Singh, a research fellow at UniSA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The research comes amid growing concern about youth mental health, with one in four Australian children now experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety, often from a young age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Singh said pressures from school, uncertainty about the future, and constant exposure to social media were major contributors.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">He believes movement is a low-cost, accessible tool that can help families, schools and policymakers respond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cA lot of children either don\u2019t receive treatment or don\u2019t respond well to traditional methods like therapy or medication,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cMovement gives us a practical alternative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The study found the greatest mental health improvements occurred in programs lasting fewer than 12 weeks, meaning children don\u2019t need to wait months to see results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Importantly, the activity didn\u2019t need to be intense or structured. Informal movement, such as walking, riding a bike or playing a game outside, delivered similar mental health benefits to team sports or exercise classes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be elite sport,\u201d Singh said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cA game of backyard cricket or a bike ride with friends is enough.
