{"id":278501,"date":"2025-07-20T23:10:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T23:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/278501\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T23:10:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T23:10:09","slug":"sewage-spills-hit-britains-tourist-hotspots-following-torrential-rain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/278501\/","title":{"rendered":"Sewage spills hit Britain&#8217;s tourist hotspots following torrential rain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tThe Environment Secretary Steve Reed has vowed to halve sewage spills across England by 2030\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/heavy-rain-sparks-sewage-discharges-across-london-pollution-incidents-up-60-3815488?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sewage spills<\/a> were recorded across England this weekend as torrential rain overwhelmed water companies\u2019 infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Popular tourist spots from Northumberland to Cornwall were polluted with raw waste, as water companies were forced to discharge sewage through \u2018storm overflows\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/sewage-permits-water-firms-pollute-rivers-2916824?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Storm overflows<\/a> are used to prevent water companies\u2019 pipe networks from becoming overwhelmed during extreme weather in order to stop sewage backing up into peoples\u2019 homes.<\/p>\n<p>Yellow <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/power-cuts-flooding-fears-thunderstorms-bring-50mm-rain-3816017?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thunderstorm warnings<\/a> were in place across much of England over the weekend, while an amber warning was issued for London and parts of the south east. A yellow thunderstorm warning is in place for large parts of the country  until 9pm on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>During periods of extreme wet weather large amounts of rainfall makes its way into the pipe network where it mixes with sewage. <\/p>\n<p>Water companies store this excess water in large storm tanks, however, if these become full, the untreated waste must be released back into rivers via storm overflows.<\/p>\n<p>Firms have been widely criticised for how often they are doing this: in 2024 water companies spilled sewage 450,398 times. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Figures released by the Environment Agency showed serious water pollution incidents had increased by <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/serious-water-pollution-incidents-rise-60-per-cent-3812809?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60 per cent from 2023 to 2024<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Online maps published by water companies showed hundreds of storm overflows were active during the wet weather this weekend, dumping a deluge of sewage into the country\u2019s rivers, lakes and seas.<\/p>\n<p>Spills occurred at popular swim spots across the country, including Penzance in Cornwall, Morecambe Bay in the North West and Eastbourne in Kent. <\/p>\n<p>At an official bathing spot at Whitley Bay in the North East, Northumbrian Water dumped sewage for two-and-a-half hours on Saturday evening. <\/p>\n<p>A storm overflow next to Firestone Bay in Plymouth was active for four hours on Sunday morning. <\/p>\n<p>There were several sewage spills across the Isle of Wight, including at Cowes, Sandown and Shanklin. <\/p>\n<p>Sewage was dumped at West Beach in Whitstable for seven hours on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners were critical of the widespread sewage dumping at a time when large parts of the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/potato-crops-salmon-threat-britain-dried-up-rivers-3808245?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">country are in drought<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SEI_251755616.jpg\" alt=\"FALMOUTH, ENGLAND - MAY 17: Close up of a protestor's sign during the SAS Paddle Out from Gyllyngvase Beach on May 17, 2025 in Falmouth, England. (Photo by Hugh R Hastings\/Getty Images)\" class=\"wp-image-3703985\"  \/>Close up of a protestor\u2019s sign during the SAS Paddle Out from Gyllyngvase Beach on 17 May, 2025  (Photo: Hugh R Hastings\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring downpours or drought, these profit-hungry water companies are dumping sewage into our blue spaces at a disgusting rate,\u201d said Giles Bristow, CEO of Surfers Against Sewage. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the grim result of years of chronic underinvestment, and symptomatic of a system that prioritises payouts and bonuses instead of the environment or people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A drought <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/drought-declared-millions-hosepipe-bans-3806406?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been declared in five regions in the UK, including Yorkshire, the North West and Midlands<\/a>, while a further six regions are in \u201cprolonged dry weather\u201d, which means they could enter drought soon.<\/p>\n<p>Before this weekend\u2019s thunderstorms, all regions in England had recorded below average levels of rainfall for the month of July. <\/p>\n<p>Water companies said they are investing billions over the next five years to reduce the number of sewage spills. <\/p>\n<p>The regulator Ofwat has approved a record \u00a3104bn investment by water companies over the next five years, however this will be funded by average bill increases of 36 per cent before inflation.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as the Environment Secretary, Steve Reed, <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/uk-politics-latest-live-updates-3815775?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pledged on Sunday<\/a> that the Government would halve the number of sewage spills across England by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The target would be measured against last year\u2019s figures, when water companies spilled sewage 450,398 times. <\/p>\n<p>It is also rumoured that <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/failing-water-regulator-ofwat-scrapped-spike-worst-sewage-spills-3814073?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ministers are poised to announce the scrapping of Ofwat<\/a> this week in response to an independent review of the water industry that Labour ordered when it came into power. <\/p>\n<p>The shake-up would be a major win for The i Paper\u2019s <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/save-britains-rivers-i-manifesto-environmental-groups-back-3090477?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Save Britain\u2019s Rivers<\/a> campaign, which has called for a major overhaul in the way water companies are regulated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Environment Secretary Steve Reed has vowed to halve sewage spills across England by 2030 Hundreds of sewage&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":278502,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3843],"tags":[728,94476,70,94477,16,15,741],"class_list":{"0":"post-278501","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-save-britains-rivers","10":"tag-science","11":"tag-sewage","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom","14":"tag-weather"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114888089713624798","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/278501","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=278501"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/278501\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/278502"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=278501"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=278501"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=278501"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
