In 1996, JFK Jr. had an elaborate plan to convince Diana to be part of his George magazine by doing a secret meetup. \u201cWe had to draw all these cover ideas up, and he took the drawings over to the Carlyle Hotel [in New York City] to meet her,\u201d George\u00a0magazine creative director Matt Berman told People<\/a>.<\/p>\n More from StyleCaster<\/strong><\/p>\n Related: The Heartbreaking Details of Who Inherited JFK Jr.\u2019s Estate After His Death\u2014Including What Jack Schlossberg Got<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Diana was in the middle of her divorce from the then-Prince Charles and JFK Jr. was speculated to be an eligible bachelor after reportedly breaking up with his longtime girlfriend Carolyn Bessette. But what actually happened on that fateful night?<\/p>\n Did Princess Diana and JFK Jr. Date?<\/p>\n Princess Diana<\/a> and JFK Jr. never dated, and the night they met at the hotel was purely planned for business purposes. The night did have a lot of hoops to get through since the paparazzi was overtly obsessed with the two of them at the time.<\/p>\n \u201cI remember him saying, \u2018There\u2019s no way someone is not going to leak it. There\u2019s going to be paparazzi everywhere,\u2019\u201d RoseMarie Terenzio, John\u2019s executive assistant, recalled. \u201cSomeone suggested he go in disguise and I said, \u2018That\u2019s ridiculous. You\u2019re not doing that!\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n Terenzio had been to the famed hotel before and observed that the paps wouldn\u2019t encounter them at the front door and advised him, \u201cDon\u2019t go in the side entrance, because if anyone does leak it beforehand, people will expect you to go in the side. So walk in the front door.\u201d However, the press got word and they were caught red handed.<\/p>\n Diana politely rejected JFK Jr.\u2019s offer to appear on George by writing him a note saying, \u201cThank you so much, but not right now.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cShe didn\u2019t see him as the rest of the world saw him,\u201d Diana\u2019s private secretary Patrick Jephson said. \u201cAs this big, famous, handsome guy. She saw him, I think, as rather vulnerable because he had grown up in public.\u201d However, her then-sister-in-law Sarah Ferguson did find John quite attractive, noting that she \u201chad the hots for him and Diana wanted to, I think, do one up on her.\u201d<\/p>\n Terenzio also recalled of the impressions he got of her, \u201cI do remember him saying, \u2018She\u2019s really tall!\u2019 He also said she was very shy. He was surprised how demure she was. I think they had both met Mother Theresa so they spoke about that. And he said how lovely she was.\u201d And Berman noted in his memoir\u00a0JFK Jr., George, & Me \u201cThe one funny thing he said was, \u2018She\u2019s got a great pair of legs.’\u201d<\/p>\n The two did exchange friendly to each other before their deaths. Terenzio recalled that Diana wrote a letter to them from Kensington Palace. \u201cI hope\u201d\u2014and she underlined the word \u201chope,\u201d\u2014\u201cthe media are leaving both you and Carolyn alone. I know how difficult it is, but believe it or not, the worst paparazzi are here in Europe!\u201d Diana died shortly after she sent that letter after the paparazzi was chasing her in Paris.
