The group is backed by the U.S. and Israel and has led humanitarian efforts in Gaza since May, but according to the United Nations human rights office, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/07\/1165396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">674 people have been killed<\/a> near its distribution sites as of July 13.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIV added his voice to the outcry on Sunday, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/pope-leo-xiv-renews-call-immediate-ceasefire-gaza-123902161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying after a prayer ceremony<\/a> that \u201cI\u00a0once again call for an immediate end to the barbarity of this war.\u201d The previous Thursday, Israeli shelling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/07\/17\/netanyahu-apology-israel-church-strike-00461021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hit the only Catholic church<\/a> in Gaza, killing three and prompting the pope to call for \u201cthe prohibition of collective punishment [and] the indiscriminate use of force.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The weekend violence in Gaza did not draw a public response from the EU\u2019s top brass, however.
