{"id":279239,"date":"2025-07-21T06:11:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T06:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/279239\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T06:11:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T06:11:10","slug":"china-slams-eu-banking-sanctions-as-tensions-rise-ahead-of-key-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/279239\/","title":{"rendered":"China slams EU banking sanctions as tensions rise ahead of key summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Beijing has called on the European Union to \u201cimmediately cease its wrong practice\u201d of sanctioning two Chinese banks, vowing to take action to defend the interests of Chinese companies just days ahead of a key leaders\u2019 summit between the two sides.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cChina expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to this move,\u201d China\u2019s Ministry of Commerce (Mofcom) said in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cChina will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies and financial institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, in its latest package of measures designed to hobble Russia\u2019s war machine, the EU <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3318793\/european-union-sanctions-2-chinese-banks-over-aid-russia?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">announced sanctions on two small Chinese banks<\/a> from cities close to China\u2019s border with Russia: Suifenhe Rural Commercial Bank and Heihe Rural Commercial Bank.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">This came as both sides prepared for a high-stakes summit in Beijing on Thursday, where European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa are scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, according to China\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Beijing had lobbied intensively behind the scenes to get the banks removed from the package, according to sources familiar with the exchanges.
