{"id":279834,"date":"2025-07-21T11:40:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T11:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/279834\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T11:40:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T11:40:14","slug":"20-billion-comeback-and-a-5billion-dam-could-supercharge-mozambiques-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/279834\/","title":{"rendered":"$20 billion comeback and a $5billion dam could supercharge Mozambique\u2019s economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n        After years of delay, the government of Mozambique appears poised to restart the $20 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project led by TotalEnergies, while also securing World Bank financing for the largest hydropower project in Southern Africa in 50 years.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        The development, which began in 2010 following the discovery of a massive offshore natural gas deposit, received final investment approval in 2019.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        However, development was halted in 2021 due to a wave of violent attacks by Islamist extremists near the project&#8217;s site, prompting the French energy giant to suspend the initiative over safety concerns.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        \u201cWe have the small problem of jihad, terrorism,\u201d the president of Mozambique Daniel Chapo disclosed.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        In an earlier interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-21\/mozambique-nears-deal-to-revive-20-billion-total-gas-project\" id=\"a80679ac-067b-4f41-b2df-8fa309c874aa\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> in Spain, the president said that while the region is more stable than four years ago, it isn\u2019t \u201cheaven,\u201d but urged a restart nevertheless.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        President Daniel Chapo indicated that negotiations with TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyann\u00e9 are proceeding and that an agreement is expected to be reached soon.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        \u201cI was with Mr. Pouyanne two weeks ago, and things are going well,\u201d Chapo said. \u201cIn August, we will close our talks\u201d about when to restart the project, the president added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        With security in the region greatly improved, TotalEnergies plans to restart construction of the LNG project later this summer.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Mozambique\u2019s plan to generate electricity for 300 million people, and the World Bank\u2019s assistance<\/p>\n<p>\n        Additionally, Mozambique is looking forward to a future of sustainable energy in addition to LNG, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-21\/mozambique-s-6-4-billion-hydropower-plan-to-get-world-bank-funding\" id=\"5055ecf1-19ad-4532-bf54-c48a09ce10cd\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">separate Bloomberg report<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>                    <img width=\"790\" height=\"445\" alt=\"Mphanda Nkuwa dam\" title=\"Mphanda Nkuwa dam\" class=\"image lazyloaded imgWithMetaData\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf8,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg'%20width%3D'790'%20height%3D'445'%20data-ring-placeholder%3D'1'%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-original=\"https:\/\/ocdn.eu\/pulscms-transforms\/1\/QPhktkpTURBXy8yNjgxZTgxOTlkMjIyZTA3ZWE5YzFlMTY5MGU1YWI2Mi5qcGeRlQLNAxbNAb3Cww\" fetchpriority=\"low\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>\n        In an interview with the World Bank President Ajay Banga, it was revealed that the global lender plans to offer assistance for the $5 billion Mphanda Nkuwa <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.businessinsider.com\/local\/markets\/mozambique-eyes-africas-hydropower-crown-with-dollar80-billion-energy-overhaul\/erfq7jy\" id=\"c7ac5672-481e-438c-9e63-53ed1f93a3a2\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>hydroelectric project<\/strong><\/a> on the Zambezi River, and a related $1.4 billion power transmission project.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        The dam, which has a planned capacity of 1,500 megawatts, is scheduled to be operational by 2031.
