{"id":280171,"date":"2025-07-21T14:45:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T14:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/280171\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T14:45:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T14:45:12","slug":"hong-kong-counts-cost-of-typhoon-wipha-losses-of-up-to-hk2-billion-on-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/280171\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong counts cost of Typhoon Wipha: losses of \u2018up to HK$2 billion\u2019 on Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Typhoon Wipha may have caused financial losses of up to HK$2 billion (US$255 million) on Sunday alone, economists have said, as Hong Kong businesses counted the cost of a storm that triggered the maximum No 10 warning signal.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">City leader John Lee Ka-chiu on Monday noted that \u201csignificant reform\u201d of the stock market allowed trading sessions during typhoons, and aimed to enhance Hong Kong\u2019s competitiveness and minimise disruptions caused by severe weather.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Professor Terence Chong Tai-leung, executive director of the Lau Chor Tak Institute of Global Economics and Finance at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), said that the catering, retail and transport sectors took the biggest hit from Wipha.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Wipha, a Thai name meaning \u201csplendour\u201d or \u201cradiance\u201d, forced most residents to stay indoors and led to the cancellation of 500 flights, affecting around 100,000 passengers.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Chong estimated that the losses on Sunday could be around HK$2 billion to HK$3 billion.
