Ukraine\u2019s parliament appointed a new Prime Minister and Defense Minister in the country\u2019s biggest government shake up<\/a> since the war began. <\/p>\n

The new government also approved a plan<\/a> to expand local arms manufacturing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must reach the level of 50% Ukraine-made weapons within the first 6 months of the new Government\u2019s work,\u201d President Volodymyr Zelensky said. \u201cThe Ministry of Defence will have greater influence over weapons production, and there must be more Ukraine-made weapons, more of them in the hands of our warriors on the frontline.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reshuffle comes days after President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced<\/a> a new plan that will see the alliance buy U.S.-made weapons, including Patriot missiles, to help Ukraine defend itself. <\/p>\n

Trump also threatened<\/a> \u201cvery severe tariffs\u201d against Russia and countries that buy its oil and gas if a cease-fire deal is not reached within 50 days, in addition to voicing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin.\u201cI speak to him a lot about getting this thing done, and I always hang up and say \u2018well that was a nice phone call\u2019 and then missiles are launched into Kyiv,\u201d he said. \u201cAfter that happens three or four times you say \u2018the talk doesn\u2019t mean anything\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has increasingly criticized<\/a> Putin in recent weeks. <\/p>\n

The reshuffle of Ukraine\u2019s government has been widely seen as a bid to boost relations with Trump<\/a>. Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, who was key in striking a mineral deal<\/a> with the U.S. in May, was appointed as the new Prime Minister<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n
