{"id":280528,"date":"2025-07-21T17:52:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T17:52:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/280528\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T17:52:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T17:52:13","slug":"divers-find-lost-royal-navy-warship-109-years-after-ww1-sinking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/280528\/","title":{"rendered":"Divers find lost Royal Navy warship 109 years after WW1 sinking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Euan O&#8217;Byrne Mulligan<\/p>\n<p>BBC News<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752661270_973_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/9bbb1b80-6646-11f0-b399-07ad39de86f7.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"eager\" alt=\"Steffen Scholz Divers explored the wreckage of HMS Nottingham with lights in the deep sea.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>Steffen Scholz<\/p>\n<p>The ship had been lost for more than a century until a team of divers discovered its location<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Divers have found the wreckage of a Royal Navy warship in the North Sea &#8211; more than 100 years after it was sunk during World War One.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">HMS Nottingham was identified 60 miles off the coast of Scotland by a team of ten divers led by ProjectXplore, an international project that aims to locate historically-significant shipwrecks around the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Thirty-eight crew members were killed when the 457ft ship was torpedoed by a German submarine on 19 August 1916.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Its resting place, at a depth of 82 metres, remained a mystery until ProjectXplore documented the site this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The team said it had &#8220;no doubt&#8221; about the ship&#8217;s identity due to its name stamp, dimensions, equipment and condition, which matched reports about the circumstances of the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Divers also found white dinner plates stamped with a Royal Navy blue crown emblem, as well as the embossed lettering &#8220;Nottingham&#8221; on the top of the stern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">HMS Nottingham was struck three times on its port side while on a reconnaissance mission.
