Birmingham City are assembling a very strong squad ahead of their return to the Championship, but letting Alfie May leave this summer would be a mistake.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After absolutely obliterating the opposition in League One with a record-breaking points haul, Birmingham City<\/a> are preparing for life back in the second tier.<\/p>\n

We always knew the Blues would be aggressive in the transfer market as they attempt to secure back-to-back promotions, but the Birmingham signings so far this summer<\/a> have been even more impressive than expected.<\/p>\n

Chris Davies\u2019<\/a> side are now hotly-tipped to go up this season, but as the Blues evolve, players like Alfie May are destined to fall by the wayside.<\/p>\n

According to Darren Witcoop, Birmingham are negotiating a deal to sell May to League One<\/a> favourites Huddersfield Town<\/a>, with a \u00a31.3m price tag mooted.<\/p>\n

The Terriers are keen to get a transfer concluded, and May would become the latest in a long line of Huddersfield signings this summer<\/a> that have made them top contenders for promotion in the third tier.<\/p>\n

The signing of May would be another big signal of intent from Huddersfield, with the likes of Ryan Ledson, Marcus Harness, and Lynden Gooch all bringing Championship<\/a> experience to League One.<\/p>\n

Sure, it\u2019s a pretty costly transfer for a 32-year-old, but given he scored 16 goals (and added eight assists) in League One last season, it\u2019s a small price to pay to all but guarantee promotion for the Terriers.<\/p>\n

For Birmingham, however, it feels like a grave error letting May go this summer. He may be past his peak, but after his contributions last season, he surely deserves a shot at the second tier once more.<\/p>\n

The Scottish forward scored just five goals in 32 games for the Blues after joining from QPR last summer; not exactly the kind of output you\u2019d expect from a striker involved in a promotion-chasing team.<\/p>\n

May is the kind of striker who can make things happen, who causes a nuisance of himself and always seems to pop up in the right place at the right time. As a super-sub, Birmingham could not really ask for more.<\/p>\n

Of course, if Birmingham are planning to sign another striker this summer, then letting May go would make sense. If not, Tom Wagner and co. could be looking back on this decision at the end of the season and regretting it.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
