The rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is in the foreground.<\/p>\n<p>Veress said in a statement on July 21 that scientists from the observatory are closely watching the <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nps.gov%2Fyell%2Flearn%2Fnature%2Fvolcano.htm&amp;data=05%7C02%7Csdmartin%40usatoday.com%7C146fc834e09d46ae257f08ddc880b308%7Cbc924c8d3e164e88bf26d7fcfb14f2d5%7C0%7C0%7C638887177293715244%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=p%2F4JQtfNFcnJq72Hq%2BhLKXokyt7k5XeDPUJ9TYRJjLQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Yellowstone volcan;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Yellowstone volcan<\/a>o.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese monitors would detect sudden or strong earthquake activity, ground shifts, and volcanic gases that would indicate increasing activity,\u201d Veress said. \u201cNo such evidence exists at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that an eruption is \u201ctheoretically possible but it is very unlikely in the next thousand or even 10,000 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When did the Yellowstone volcano last erupt?<\/p>\n<p>There have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/learn\/nature\/volcano.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:three major eruptions;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">three major eruptions<\/a> at Yellowstone, according to NPS.<\/p>\n<p>The volcano last erupted approximately 174,000 years ago, creating what is now known as the West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake, the NPS said on its website.<\/p>\n<p>The third and most recent massive volcanic eruption occurred 631,000 years ago, although there have been about 80 smaller eruptions since then.<\/p>\n<p>Park officials said the best place to get current and accurate information about the park is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:www.nps.gov;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">www.nps.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Saleen Martin is a reporter on USA TODAY&#8217;s NOW team.
