Manchester United were said to hold an interest in Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, but a report claims they upset the striker earlier in the transfer window.<\/p>\n

Sporting Lisbon<\/strong><\/a> striker Viktor Gyokeres<\/strong><\/a> is said to have been troubled by how Swedish teammate Victor Lindelof<\/strong><\/a> was offloaded by Manchester United<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Red Devils’ secured their second major arrival of the summer transfer window<\/a> on Monday, when they announced the signing of winger Bryan Mbeumo<\/strong><\/a> from Brentford in a deal that could rise to \u00a371m.<\/p>\n

His acquisition could significantly revamp the squad’s attack, though the club are still reported to be in the market for a starting striker considering Rasmus Hojlund<\/strong><\/a> has struggled at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

Sporting number nine Gyokeres was thought to be a serious target for boss Ruben Amorim<\/strong><\/a>, who previously coached him for the Portuguese side, but the Swede is close to joining Arsenal.<\/p>\n

Record<\/a> claim that United may have had a better chance at signing him had Amorim fought to keep Swedish defender Lindelof, who shares Hasan Cetinkaya as an agent with Gyokeres, but the Portuguese allowed the centre-back’s contract to expire without complaint.<\/p>\n

The signings of players like Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha<\/strong><\/a> have set the club back more than \u00a3130m, and they rank as Europe’s fourth highest spenders so far this summer (\u00a3132.8m).<\/p>\n

Such expenditure will almost certainly mean that Amorim has to facilitate the exits of a number of current stars in order to spend further, and letting Lindelof leave would have reduced an inflated wage bill.<\/p>\n

United winger Marcus Rashford has agreed a loan deal with Barcelona<\/a>, and the La Liga giants are reportedly set to pay the Englishman’s salary in its entirety.<\/p>\n

Other high earners such as Anthony and\u00a0Alejandro Garnacho<\/strong><\/a> have been linked with moves away, and it is clear that the Red Devils are hoping to considerably trim their squad.<\/p>\n

Are United taking the right approach in the summer transfer window?<\/p>\n

By removing established stars, there is a risk that Amorim is weakening his options next season, especially as attackers like Rashford have proven they are capable of making an impact at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

However, the Red Devils’ two major signings – Mbeumo and Cunha – have excelled in the Premier League, and perhaps the club have deliberately targeted those with experience in England.<\/p>\n

Aston Villa goalkeeper\u00a0Emiliano Martinez<\/strong><\/a> and striker Ollie Watkins<\/strong><\/a> have been linked with switches to Old Trafford, and their signatures could help transform Amorim’s fortunes.<\/p>\n

After United finished 15th in the Premier League last term and failed to qualify for Europe, it is not surprising that the team’s hierarchy want to offload several stars.<\/p>\n
