{"id":282012,"date":"2025-07-22T08:18:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T08:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/282012\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T08:18:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T08:18:11","slug":"burnhams-avenue-tennis-club-celebrates-league-success-and-drama-filled-season-finale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/282012\/","title":{"rendered":"Burnham&#8217;s Avenue Tennis Club celebrates league success and drama-filled season finale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Burnham-On-Sea\u2019s Avenue Tennis Club is celebrating an impressive season across its teams in the North Somerset Tennis League, with the Men\u2019s B team clinching promotion and the Men\u2019s E side escaping relegation in a nail-biting conclusion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Men\u2019s B team\u2014led by captain Sam Goodhew and featuring Ned Lawton, Simon Blewitt, Steve Eley, and Phil Hodgson\u2014secured second place in Division Four, earning a promotion to Division Three.<\/p>\n<p>The team finished the season level on 68 points with Nailsea A but edged ahead based on match wins, boasting a 55.4% win ratio compared to Nailsea\u2019s 52.7%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.burnham-on-sea.com\/?attachment_id=219786\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-219786 noopener\" data-slb-active=\"1\" data-slb-asset=\"1657577134\" data-slb-internal=\"219786\" data-slb-group=\"219785\" target=\"_blank\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-219786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Avenue-E-Mens-Team.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1068\" height=\"801\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sixteen-year-old Lawton made an outstanding contribution and topped the division\u2019s individual player rankings in his first full season with the men\u2019s squad. Captain Goodhew said the team is \u201cexcited for the challenge of competing in Division Three next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over in Division Nine, Avenue\u2019s E team\u2014captained by Paul Carter\u2014faced high-stakes drama in their final fixture against Bridgwater D. With the possibility of either promotion or relegation looming, Avenue\u2019s players (Robin Dummelow, Tomasz Iracki, Will Harris, Darren Lloyd, and Richard Mear) fought hard, winning three sets. Bridgwater took the match 8\u20133, sealing their championship win, but Avenue\u2019s trio of sets won was enough to keep them in the division.<\/p>\n<p>Avenue\u2019s other teams also saw notable success this summer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ladies A and B teams topped their respective divisions<\/li>\n<li>Men\u2019s A team finished runners-up in Division One<\/li>\n<li>Several other teams placed securely mid-table<br \/>The Men\u2019s F team has one fixture remaining after a weather-related postponement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With league tennis wrapped up, Avenue will host friendly matchplay sessions on Monday and Tuesday evenings. The club is also preparing for two major tournaments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Burnham-on-Sea Open<\/strong> (17\u201323 August): Free entry for spectators and onsite catering<\/li>\n<li><strong>Somerset County Closed<\/strong>: A showcase of local talent the following week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Members and non-members are invited to enjoy Wednesday supper evenings at the clubhouse, offering top-value meals and social gatherings. Fridays are family night, packed with adult coaching and junior fun tennis sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Boasting eight floodlit courts and a vibrant social calendar, Avenue Tennis Club welcomes players of all ages and abilities.
