{"id":282181,"date":"2025-07-22T09:48:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T09:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/282181\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T09:48:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T09:48:11","slug":"washington-open-venus-williams-45-wins-doubles-match-after-16-month-absence-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/282181\/","title":{"rendered":"Washington Open: Venus Williams, 45, wins doubles match after 16-month absence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams has celebrated victory in the last 16 of the women&#8217;s doubles at the Washington Open after 16 months away from tennis. <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 45-year-old former world number one, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/tennis\/articles\/cn86zpn80v1o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accepted a wildcard<\/a> for the tournament, had not competed since the Miami Open in March 2024 &#8211; and last won at the Cincinnati Open in August 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Williams and fellow American Hailey Baptiste beat Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue 6-3 6-1. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It was inspiring to be out here,&#8221; Williams told Sky Sports. &#8220;I love this game and still hitting it big.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She will face another American, Peyton Stearns, in the first round of the singles competition on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Williams, who was playing doubles for the first time in three years, joked she wished she could have partnered with 23-year-old Baptiste, the world number 50, instead of her sister Serena &#8211; the 23-time major champion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She said: &#8220;I think from the first point I could see that we were going to be a good team. We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right?
