One high-profile ex-player has had his say.

12:52, 22 Jul 2025Updated 13:03, 22 Jul 2025

Warrington coach Sam Burgess.

Adrian Morley believes Warrington Wolves’ poor Super League form is down to a Challenge Cup final ‘hangover’—but ‘the former prop forward is still backing ex-Great Britain and England teammate Sam Burgess to turn things around.

In fact, Morley, who played 173 games for Warrington between 2007 and 2013, believes Burgess, in his second season as head coach, is the right man for the job.

The Wire have won just three of their six games since a last-gasp cup final defeat to Hull KR at the start of June, with defeats coming against two of Super League’s bottom three—Huddersfield Giants and Castleford Tigers. They also lost to Leeds Rhinos and have beaten Hull FC, Salford Red Devils, and Catalans Dragons since Wembley.

That run has left their push for the play-offs under threat, and in truth, their season was up and down prior to the cup final, with Warrington blowing hot and cold throughout 2025.

Like every team, they’ve had injuries to deal with, most notably cruel blows to Matty Ashton and Danny Walker, but Morley believes the club can’t use that as an excuse—with many other teams throughout Super League in the same boat.

“It’s a tough one,” Morley said when asked on All Out Rugby League’s new podcast ‘Back Ten’ what’s going on at Warrington. “It’s a bit of a head scratcher, really. Last year they were dramatically improved. They made a Challenge Cup final, and they were a controversial try away from a Grand Final appearance as well.

“I thought, another year under Sam and they’ll kick on, go one better, or be more improved, but that Challenge Cup final loss, which was heartbreaking, has had a negative effect on them really.

“They did everything right—the game plan was great, the tactics were great, and they executed it great, and then they got their pockets pinched at the end of the game.

“As professionals you shouldn’t have hangovers like that and let them affect you, but I think it really has. They’ve got a fantastic squad; they’re talented, and they should be doing better than what they’re doing. To lose away at Castleford, who are struggling themselves, is a major blow for the club and Sam. “

Warrington are next in action against Leigh Leopards after a week off, with the upcoming Super League round split over two weekends. Meanwhile, Morley believes that break has come at the right time.

He continued: “It (the season) has been very stop-start and very inconsistent. One week they’d look great, and the next week they’d be poor. I can’t put my finger on it. They’ve had injuries, but every club has had injuries—you can’t use that as an excuse in the current game. They are now getting a few bodies back, and they should be doing a lot better than what they are.

“They’ve got a week off now to regroup. They’ve made it really hard for themselves to make the play-offs and even if they do, they don’t want to scrape in and just be whipping boys. They want to go on with a bit of form and do something in those play-offs.

“It’s going to be tough, but they have got a quality squad and a quality coach who I believe is the right man for the job. But they need to pull their finger out and start getting two points.”

Morley, who first made his name with Leeds Rhinos in the 90s before a stellar NRL career with the Sydney Roosters, is also adamant Warrington’s culture isn’t an issue—albeit he ‘can’t put a finger’ on what the problem is.

“I don’t think so,” the 48-year-old replied when asked if the culture is a problem. “It wasn’t when I was there. It was a great culture.

“Knowing Sam personally and what he does in training, I think he’s got a great system there, and the players have bought into what he wants to achieve. It’s just not exchanging to wins and two points, but again last year was really promising, and you thought this year was going to be the year. I don’t think there’s any issue with the culture, but again, I can’t put my finger on what the problem is.”

But despite recent woes, Morley is backing Warrington to still make the play-offs. They are currently two points behind Wakefield and three behind sixth-placed Hull FC with eight rounds of the regular season to go.

“Yes—I still think they can,” Morley said on Wire’s top six chances. “The squad is quality from top to bottom. They just need a bit of confidence, really.

“A couple of wins and it’s amazing how fast you can climb the ladder. It will be tough; the teams in front of them are hitting some form as well. The week off has come at the right time for them. They can freshen up, get back to the drawing board, and get ready.”

The right man for the job?
