\u2018They’re not political, but there’s a pop politic to that\u2019 PLUS Manc, Irish, but not quite EnglishHello,<\/strong><\/p>\n

Like some massive Mancunian cliche I headed to Oasis over the weekend and it was pretty great.<\/a><\/p>\n

Not only was it a \u2018moment in rock \u2018n\u2019 roll history\u2019<\/a>, but the atmosphere was completely brilliant.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll admit that my cousin and I had been worried about a few things before heading over to Heaton Park<\/a>. How to get there, how to leave and how to dodge what we apprehensively termed \u2018the pissiles\u2019<\/a>. But we needn\u2019t have worried.<\/p>\n

This was such a brilliantly organised, vast operation – a real moment in Manchester history – that all we needed to do for our part was lift our arms in the air and shout \u2018maybeeeee\u2019.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong, there were plenty of people savouring the experience a little too hard. Like the inebriated man who approached us for an unsolicited chat – his marble eyes popping out from his skull on stalks. Or the girl doing a big sick by the entrance at 7pm. Or the very drunk man not far behind her being escorted out by paramedics.<\/p>\n

Go hard or go home, I assume they would all say.<\/p>\n

But this atmosphere of hedonism certainly didn\u2019t mar the experience. Sure it wasn\u2019t a genteel garden party, but neither did it resemble the last days of Rome.<\/p>\n

To me, the lovely thing was seeing everyone in an absolutely brilliant mood. From the teenagers flogging dodgy t-shirts on Bury<\/a> Old Road, to the man selling cheesy nachos on his front drive<\/a> and the kids bellowing \u201cred or blue?\u201d over their garden fence.<\/p>\n

Although of course nothing quite illustrates a city in celebration better than the fans on Gallagher Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Their fringe event – which started small and spiralled<\/a> – became so synonymous with Oasis\u2019 Manchester gigs that Liam dedicated a song to them each night.<\/p>\n

To quote my pal who went to the hill each night: \u201cIt was a moment of collective joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

I know we\u2019ve written many, many words about Oasis this past fortnight but I do think it\u2019s extraordinary that one band can bring so much love, attention and let\u2019s be honest, money, to the city.<\/p>\n

Even for those without tickets, it was an experience and a half.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re still buzzin\u2019 after the Manchester shows, I\u2019d highly recommend Jenna Campbell\u2019s roundup of two weeks of Oasis mania<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dianne Bourne\u2019s interview with John Robb<\/a> – the music journalist who watched the band\u2019s first gigs – is also a fascinating read.<\/p>\n

Among his musings on a band \u2018at the peak of their game\u2019 he makes an interesting point about how Oasis have transcended the generations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey’re eternal songs – they’re songs about escape from a crap life really,\u201d he says. \u201cAbout that dream.<\/p>\n

“I know they’re not political, but there’s a pop politic to that, one of the greatest things that music does is providing an escape and making you feel bigger than you are.”<\/p>\n

That in-between space<\/strong><\/p>\n

Without a doubt my favourite piece of writing this week is from my colleague Caitlin Griffin – who has elegantly explained the musical connections between Manchester and Ireland.<\/p>\n

Her very funny, very personal article<\/a> sheds light on a band who are Irish, Mancunian but not quite English.<\/p>\n

\"NoelNoel and Liam Gallagher spent their summers an hour down the road from where Caitlin grew up<\/p>\n

She writes: \u201cThere\u2019s a special relationship those who aren\u2019t fully Irish, but not quite English, have with Oasis. Those who exist in that in-between space, where their name may have been mispronounced at school, but at home it\u2019s said with pride.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who have been shaped by their immigrant parents\u2019 generational hardships and quiet resilience. Those who have developed the notorious Irish Mancunian humour and welcoming attitude of warmth layered with toughness.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something in the bones of Oasis that hits differently when you\u2019re Irish in Manchester. A culmination of Manchester streets and Mayo summers, Irish Mancs don\u2019t just like Oasis. They\u2019re proud of them. They identify with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a beautiful piece I\u2019d highly recommend.<\/a><\/p>\n

Investigation into bus crash<\/strong><\/p>\n

A bus driver has been arrested after crashing into a low bridge in Salford<\/a> – causing a passenger to be ‘ejected’ from the top deck.<\/p>\n

Police say three people were seriously injured following the collision on Barton<\/a> Lane, in Eccles<\/a>, yesterday (July 21) while 17 other casualties were treated at the scene.<\/p>\n

The bus driver – a man in his 50s – was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. He has since been bailed pending further investigations.<\/p>\n

Four and half years after Awaab Ishak died aged two due to mould at his home in Rochdale<\/a>, change is finally coming. The first measures under Awaab’s Law will come into force in October.<\/p>\n

Christian Weaver, a barrister at Garden Court North Chambers, represented the Ishak family during the inquest into Awaab’s tragic death. He continued to represent the family throughout the campaign that followed – to make Awaab’s Law a reality.<\/p>\n

Writing exclusively for the M.E.N., he reflects on the progress made so far and how the new rules should bring about real change.<\/p>\n

James Copley admits he was \u2018too chicken\u2019 to knock on Noel Gallagher\u2019s front door.<\/p>\n

The Noasis frontman says he \u2018legged it\u2019 but when other band members knocked, Noel\u2019s wife answered and went to get him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe could not have been any less interested. He asked \u2018what do you want?\u2019 so we asked if he wanted to come to our show down the road. He said: \u2018No. Not at all.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cWe asked for a picture with him. We were all sitting on the doorstep and he yawned in it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all said \u2018Thank you Mr Gallagher\u2019 like we were Kevin and Perry.\u201d<\/p>\n
