{"id":283006,"date":"2025-07-22T16:57:17","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T16:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/283006\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T16:57:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T16:57:17","slug":"man-rescued-trying-to-reach-spain-from-morocco-in-rubber-ring-and-flippers-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/283006\/","title":{"rendered":"Man rescued trying to reach Spain from Morocco in rubber ring and flippers | Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A man who was apparently trying to reach Spain from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/morocco\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morocco<\/a> using a rubber ring and flippers has been rescued after he was spotted by a family sailing to the Balearic islands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The family were on their yacht 13 nautical miles south of the Andaluc\u00edan town of Benalm\u00e1dena on the Costa del Sol, on 16 July when they manoeuvred around the stern of an oil tanker and saw something moving on the waves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diariosur.es\/sucesos\/rescatado-alta-mar-cruzaba-estrecho-flotador-aletas-malaga-20250719143931-nt.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diario Sur newspaper<\/a>, they assumed it was a bird until they looked through a pair of binoculars and realised it was a person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Video of the rescue, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100069003033886\/videos\/pcb.1045771617732930\/760269176449726\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shared on social media<\/a> by the Spanish Royal Assembly of Yacht Captains (RAECY), shows the exhausted young man swimming towards the yacht as a rope is thrown for him to grab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">After bringing him on to the boat, the family gave him water, clothes and a cup of soup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cWe\u2019ve called in a shipwrecked man and we\u2019re going to pick him up,\u201d says a man in the footage as he pans the camera around the empty waters. \u201cIt\u2019s incredible where he is because just look, all the passing boats are really far away from him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Sources at the RAECY said the man was wearing a wetsuit and was equipped with only the ring and a pair of flippers. \u201cHe almost didn\u2019t speak,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The family headed for the port of Estepona but were met by a maritime rescue service vessel at sea that took the man to port in M\u00e1laga and handed him over to police and the Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Such dangerous crossings are not uncommon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cDozens of migrants try to reach Spain like this, using the only basic means they can afford,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/espana\/2025-07-21\/rescatado-un-hombre-cuando-cruzaba-el-estrecho-en-flotador-y-aletas.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote Mar\u00eda Mart\u00edn<\/a>, migration correspondent for the Spanish daily newspaper El Pa\u00eds.
