SpaceX launches NASA TRACERS mission to study magnetic explosions - YouTube\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"watch-on-youtube-zZHO3SR-cKI\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/zZHO3SR-cKI\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/zZHO3SR-cKI\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch On <\/a><\/p>\n<p>NASA&#8217;s TRACERS (Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites) mission is set to blast off from California&#8217;s Vandenberg Air Force Base on Tuesday (July 22), embarking on a quest to learn more about how the solar wind interacts with our planet&#8217;s magnetic field.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/2-new-nasa-satellites-will-track-space-weather-to-help-keep-us-safe-from-solar-storms\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/2-new-nasa-satellites-will-track-space-weather-to-help-keep-us-safe-from-solar-storms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TRACERS<\/a> is composed of twin satellites that will study how surges in the solar wind trigger magnetic reconnection in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>&#8216;s magnetosphere; such reconnection leads to charged particles being funneled down the magnetic cusps over the poles, sparking <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">auroral lights<\/a> and geomagnetic storms. By having two satellites in close proximity to one another, TRACERS will be able to see how areas of Earth&#8217;s magnetic field that are undergoing reconnection \u2014 the snapping and recombining of field lines \u2014 change over short time frames. This reconnection happens as activity between the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sun<\/a>&#8216;s solar wind (a continual stream of charged particles from our star) occasionally moves around denser patches stemming from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coronal mass ejections<\/a>. Meanwhile, Earth&#8217;s magnetic field waxes and wanes during this process.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the TRACERS launch on SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/spacex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/spacex.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/spacex\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/spacex\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">X account<\/a>, with the launch window opening at <strong>2:13pm EDT (11:13am PDT\/7:13pm BST)<\/strong>. We will also be carrying the stream right here on Space.com. (Image credit: University of Iowa\/Andy Kale.)<\/p>\n<p>TRACERS will launch for a low-Earth orbit of 367 miles (590 kilometers) on a SpaceX <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Falcon 9 rocket<\/a> alongside three additional NASA missions.
