{"id":283729,"date":"2025-07-22T23:30:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T23:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/283729\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T23:30:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T23:30:11","slug":"carlos-alcaraz-becomes-latest-leading-player-to-withdraw-from-canadian-open-tennis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/283729\/","title":{"rendered":"Carlos Alcaraz becomes latest leading player to withdraw from Canadian Open | Tennis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Carlos Alcaraz has become the latest in a series of leading men\u2019s players to withdraw from the Canadian Open as the world No 2 joined Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper on the sidelines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The players are skipping the Toronto tournament, due to begin on Saturday, to rest and recover from injury before the final grand slam of the season, the US Open in New York starting on 25 August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Alcaraz, who lost to Sinner in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/jul\/13\/jannik-sinner-roars-carlos-alcaraz-first-wimbledon-final-win-tennis\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Wimbledon singles final<\/a> nine days ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/carlosalcaraz\/status\/1947401612672274930\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">apologised to fans via X<\/a>, saying: \u201cI will not be able to play in Toronto this year, I have small muscles issues and I need to recover physically and mentally for what comes next. To the tournament and to my fans in Canada I am very sorry, I will see you next year!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jackdraper0\/status\/1946932708338475073\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Draper revealed on X<\/a> that he would also miss the Cincinnati Open starting 5 August. The British No 1 wrote: \u201cAfter Wimbledon I picked up an injury in my left arm, nothing serious, but I have to make sure it recovers fully for the rest of the season. Unfortunately, I won\u2019t be able to compete in Toronto and Cincinnati \u2026 see you in NYC!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Sinner is looks to protect his elbow, after a tumble in his fourth-round match against Grigor Dmitrov at Wimbledon. Djokovic also suffered niggling injuries throughout his run at the tournament, with a groin problem ultimately being the main reason he will be absent from Toronto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Alexander Zverev, the world No 3, and Taylor Fritz, ranked No 4, are likely to be the top seeds in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Many players have spoken out against the scheduling on both the men\u2019s Association of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/tennis\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tennis<\/a> Professionals (ATP) and the Women\u2019s Tennis Association (WTA) tours.
