Umberto Rispoli and Journalism after Saturday’s Haskell<\/strong> | Sarah Andrew<\/p>\n

Jockey Umberto Rispoli has waived his right to appeal and will serve a one-day suspension and pay a $6,000 fine meted out by the Monmouth Park stewards for striking Journalism (Curlin<\/a>) a total of eight times\u2013two more than the maximum allowed under the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) rule\u2013when winning the GI Haskell Stakes on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Marcus Hersh of Daily Racing Form broke the news on Tuesday. As of 6 p.m. Eastern time July 22, Rispoli’s penalties had not yet been posted on the online rulings portals for either HISA or the New Jersey Racing Commission.<\/p>\n

Journalism won the Haskell by a half-length with a late run from seventh in the field of eight.<\/p>\n

Hersch quoted Rispoli’s agent, Matt Nakatani, as saying Rispoli plans to serve the suspension on Friday, Aug. 1.<\/p>\n

Journalism earned $600,000 in purse winnings. Under the HISA rule, a jockey’s single whipping violation within a 180-day span is penalized by a fine equating to 10% of the rider’s winning share (in this case $60,000 for Rispoli), plus a one-day suspension.<\/p>\n
