The official age of retirement is 66 for men and women, but is <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/new-state-pension-age-rise-35052884\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"set to rise to 67 Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">set to rise to 67 <\/a>between 2026 and 2028 under current UK Government plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Those who are eligible for the New State Pension (post April 2016) can benefit from a one per cent increase in their weekly State Pension for every nine weeks they delay <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/new-state-pension-pay-rates-32542561\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"claiming the paymentLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">claiming the payment<\/a>, equivalent to nearly 5.8 per cent extra income for every full year deferred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The New State Pension is now worth \u00a3230.25 each week over the 2025\/26 financial year. People due to retire, who choose to defer claiming the State Pension, will benefit from an extra <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/deferring-state-pension\/what-you-get\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\u00a313.35 every weekLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a313.35 every week<\/a> &#8211; equivalent to a boost of \u00a3694.20 over the next 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/state-pension-tax-online-calculator-35057489\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People over State Pension age can check if they need to pay any tax using DWP online tool<\/a>READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/new-state-pension-age-rise-35052884\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New State Pension age set to rise next year for people with certain birthdates<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Those who reached retirement age before April 6, 2016, but chose to defer claiming the Basic State Pension, are treated more generously, according to Just Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">These retirees receive an extra one per cent State Pension income for every five weeks deferred, equal to an annual rise of 10.4 per cent or \u00a3954.20, which can be taken either as extra income or a lump sum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Example<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">You get \u00a3176.45 a week (the full Basic State Pension)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">By deferring for 52 weeks, you\u2019ll get an extra \u00a318.35 a week (10.4% of \u00a3176.45).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justgroupplc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Just GroupLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Just Group<\/a> research indicated that women (26%) were significantly more likely than men (19%) not to know about the possibility of deferring the State Pension, while 26 per cent of those aged 75 and over also did not know deferral was an option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Commenting on the findings, Stephen Lowe, group communications director at Just Group, said: \u201cDeferring can be a good option for people who don\u2019t need the income immediately &#8211; perhaps because they are still working or have other sources of cash &#8211; so it is disappointing a quarter of those approaching State Pension age don\u2019t know about the option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, he added: \u201cWhile deferring might not be the right option for everyone, it should still be something everyone knows about given that the State Pension is widely considered a \u2018bread and butter\u2019 source of income in retirement, with 3.4 million retired households relying on it for more than half of their yearly income.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cDeferring has become less attractive in recent years because the terms have become less generous for those who reached State Pension age on or after 6 April 2016 and there is no option to take the deferred income as a lump sum. However, even for those who reached State Pension age after that date, in some circumstances it can still make sense to forgo some income in the short-term for a higher income in later life that is currently guaranteed to keep up with inflation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The retirement specialist said that the State Pension provides an important bedrock of income for many pensioners so it\u2019s crucial people have a full understanding of all the options that are available to them.<\/p>\n<p>State Pension payments 2025\/26<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The New and Basic State Pensions increased by 4.1 per cent on April 7, additional elements such as deferred rates have gone up by 1.7 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Full New State Pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">Weekly payment: \u00a3230.25 (from \u00a3221.20)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">Four-weekly payment: \u00a3921 (from \u00a3884.80)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">Annual amount: \u00a311,973 (from \u00a311,502)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Full Basic State Pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">Weekly payment: \u00a3176.45 (from \u00a3169.50)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">Four-weekly payment: \u00a3705.80 (from \u00a3678)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">Annual amount: \u00a39,175 (from \u00a38,814)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Future State Pension increases<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Labour Government has pledged to honour the Triple Lock or the next five years and the latest predictions show the following projected annual increases:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2025\/26<\/strong> &#8211; 4.1% (the forecast was 4%)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2026\/27 &#8211;<\/strong> 2.5%<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2027\/28<\/strong> &#8211; 2.5%<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2028\/29<\/strong> &#8211; 2.5%<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2029\/30<\/strong> &#8211; 2.5%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>State Pension and tax<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Personal Allowance will remain frozen at \u00a312,570 over the 2025\/26 financial year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The most important thing to remember is that someone only on the full New State Pension will not pay income tax for the next two years, but older people with additional income through employment, private or workplace pensions, might need to pay tax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The amount of tax paid is only on the amount over the personal allowance, and not the entire amount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Anyone with additional income on top of their State Pension may need to pay tax.
