{"id":284310,"date":"2025-07-23T04:41:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T04:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/284310\/"},"modified":"2025-07-23T04:41:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T04:41:13","slug":"euro-2025-england-players-and-substitutes-stand-in-support-of-jess-carter-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/284310\/","title":{"rendered":"Euro 2025: England players and substitutes stand in support of Jess Carter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">England&#8217;s players stood before their Euro 2025 semi-final against Italy began on Tuesday after the Lionesses decided to stop taking the knee.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The substitutes stood arm-in-arm on the touchline before kick-off in a show of solidarity with team-mate Jess Carter, who has been subjected to online racist abuse since the tournament began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They were not joined by their Italian counterparts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">When asked if Italy would make a gesture at the match, defender Cecilia Salvai said they were &#8220;open and willing to do anything necessary&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sections of the crowd at Stade de Geneve sung Carter&#8217;s song and applauded in the 16th minute in support of the defender, whose squad number is 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Sunday, England&#8217;s players announced they would no longer take the knee before the start of matches after Carter revealed she has been racially abused on social media throughout the tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/articles\/c9vrzdp7xw4o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decision was questioned <\/a>by the head of football&#8217;s international anti-discrimination body, Fare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Lionesses adopted the anti-racism gesture &#8211; popularised by American football player Colin Kaepernick in 2016 &#8211; during Euro 2022 and the 2023 Women&#8217;s World Cup, but said in a statement that it is &#8220;clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Monday, England manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/articles\/ckg5j6v02xxo\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarina Wiegman told BBC Sport&#8217;s Dan Roan<\/a>: &#8220;Taking the knee, that&#8217;s not enough. We have done that for a while.
