Placing at number five on the global ranking was the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Situated in the heart of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/edinburgh\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Scottish capitalLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish capital<\/a>, The Royal Mile is comprised of streets that form the primary thoroughfare of Edinburgh&#8217;s Old Town. Approximately a mile in length, it runs from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/edinburgh-castle\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Edinburgh CastleLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Edinburgh Castle<\/a> to Holyrood Palace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The history of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/scotland-now\/gallery\/10-best-things-do-scotland-34725038\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Royal MileLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Mile<\/a> goes back to the 12th century, when Edinburgh was a small town that surrounded the castle. The street that linked the castle to the town was named the High Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Over the following <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/history\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"centuriesLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">centuries<\/a>, Edinburgh grew and grew. These sell everything from souvenirs to whisky and fudge &#8211; with two exclusively flogging Christmas products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Many of the stores that line the Royal Mile are specifically catered towards tourists. These include businesses that stock products such as postcards, fridge magnets, and plush toys and clothing branded with the national flag of Scotland<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Additionally, the historic spot is also home to many international chains. Among these were a hairdresser, a butcher, a grocer, and a doctors&#8217; surgery\u2014the latter of which is now a whisky shop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Robertson stated: &#8220;It was probably in the 1980s you saw a lot of people moving out and the street beginning to change. I would sit on that bench and you&#8217;d watch the world go by, saying hello to folk you knew coming by.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Now I sit there and it feels like it is just tourists that pass me by. I&#8217;m not against tourism, I just think it has gone far in how it affects people who live here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Royal Mile still features a number of beauty spots and attractions that celebrate its long history. These include The Real Mary King&#8217;s Close\u2014where real people lived and worked hundreds of years ago\u2014and The Writers&#8217; Museum that is dedicated to Scottish writers Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In 2026, Edinburgh is <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/edinburgh-tourist-tax-introduced-first-34447990\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"set to introduceLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">set to introduce<\/a> a tourist tax that will be set at 5 per cent of accommodation costs.
