{"id":285379,"date":"2025-07-23T14:14:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T14:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/285379\/"},"modified":"2025-07-23T14:14:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T14:14:11","slug":"bbc-verify-live-investigating-illegal-worker-clampdown-and-ukraine-protest-misinformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/285379\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC Verify Live: Investigating illegal worker clampdown and Ukraine protest misinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is the government on course to recruit 13,000 neighbourhood police officers?published at 12:32 British Summer Time<\/p>\n<p>12:32 BST<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-8kvzjk-Contributor etflsgg2\"><strong>Phil Leake<\/strong><br \/>Data journalist<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The number of neighbourhood police officers and community support officers in England and Wales increased by just 214 in the year to March 2025, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/police-workforce-england-and-wales-31-march-2025\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Home Office figures, external<\/a> published this morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There are 17,175 officers in neighbourhood roles, up from 16,961 last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The government has pledged to increase the neighbourhood police force by 13,000 officers by the end of the Parliament in 2029.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Funding for this began in April, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cm244zxjp7ko\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prime minister announcing a target of recruiting 3,000 officers in the first year<\/a>, by March 2026.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bar chart showing the number of neighbourhood police officers and community support officers in England and Wales in March 2012 to 2025. The number held steady between 30,000 and 35,000 from 2012 to 2016, before falling to around 22,000 in 2020. The figure for 2024 was revised down by the Home Office due to amendments by forces.
